Lesley University’s Master’s program in Expressive Therapies: Psychodrama/Drama Therapy with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling equips students with the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to become an effective, qualified drama therapist.

The 60-credit Psychodrama/Drama Therapy program is ideal for those who wish to use improvisation, storytelling, role-play, performance, and other dramatic action methods to promote positive intrapersonal and interpersonal change across diverse contexts. Drama therapists and psychodramatists work in a variety of community, clinical, and forensic settings including schools, mental health clinics, hospitals, geriatric centers, and correctional facilities, as well as in private practice.
At Lesley University, Psychodrama/Drama Therapy students develop practical skills through self-reflection, collaboration with expert faculty and peers, and 1050 hours of field experience. Direct, supervised contact with clients from a range of populations is required so that you can leave the program fully prepared for professional practice.

Sample Course Descriptions
Theories in Psychodrama/Drama Therapy
3 credits
This seminar will explore the current state of the research and theoretical underpinnings of psychodrama/drama therapy and its application with individuals and groups including principles of warm-up, role therapy, action methods, spontaneous role play and social systems. This seminar includes the history, theory and clinical application of psychodrama and drama therapy including an integration of current approaches.
Theater as a Therapeutic Process
3 credits
This course introduces the students to the therapeutic use of various contemporary theater training techniques. This course will focus on the social political and community based action within drama therapy/psychodrama, applied theatre and mental health. Lectures, discussions, and feedback will complement participatory exercises.
Drama Therapy and Psychodrama for Children and Adolescents
3 credits
This course considers how to create an environment in which children and adolescents can participate in the psychodramatic process.
