The Community Design Studio at Lesley University College of Art and Design connects you with non-profit organizations to produce vital, real-world projects in a professional, supervised environment. Our dual mission is to strengthen the communities around us and, in the process, ourselves as designers. The efforts of the studio have brought impressive results to the organizations it serves. The experience has proven to be truly a win-win situation.
Learning to design is a bit like learning to speak a foreign language. Everyone knows the best way to study Spanish or French, however foolish you feel, is to open your mouth and begin to speak with native speakers. For sixteen years and running, Community Design Studio (formally Studio InFlux), a fully functioning graphic design studio at Lesley University's College of Art and Design, has given graphic design students the opportunity to put their skills into practice – in many cases for the first time.
Community designers develop sensibilities that are essential to their success while nurturing client relationships, collaborating with a team of peers, and coordinating projects with all their different attributes, from conceptual start to tangible finish. Students at the outset of class are immersed in professional design by simply scheduling a client meeting. They are completely transformed and confident when the semester ends. The design process is decoded and demystified as they work on actual projects for non-profit organizations.
Clients We've Worked With:
In most cases, these clients' projects would not have benefited from the attention of professional designers if it were not for the donated services of the student-based Community Design Studio. It's easy to see – the experience has proven to be truly a win-win situation.
