History of Lesley and ThresholdLesley University has a ninety-seven year history of educating people for the helping professions. The University provides innovative, people-oriented education for undergraduate and graduate students.
While still best known for its teacher education programs, Lesley has maintained a consistent focus on a select group of disciplines which embody its mission: education, human services, management, and the arts. A cornerstone of all its programs is the infusion of internship experiences with classroom learning. "...A distinctive and fundamental aspect of education at Lesley University is the conviction that people matter, and that the professionals who respond to their needs provide a unique service to society," reads Lesley's mission statement. "Faculty and students believe in the power of individuals - working collaboratively - to bring about constructive change." Threshold was founded in 1982 by Dr. Arlyn Roffman, Professor of Education at Lesley University, and was the first college-based program in the nation to provide comprehensive vocational and independent living training skills to this student population. David Leslie was appointed Director of Threshold Program in 1996 and served until 2003. Jim Wilbur, who has served the program for fourteen years as Director of Admissions, was appointed Director of Threshold in 2003 by President Margaret McKenna. Jim continues the tradition of strong leadership and innovation. The Threshold Program has always been committed to outreach and educating the public about the gifts and special needs of students with learning disabilities. Threshold faculty have conducted research and have published in professional journals. Faculty and administration have given numerous national conference presentations, most recently focusing on the needs of students with nonverbal learning disabilities and effective instructional approaches. Threshold celebrated its 25th Anniversary this Spring with a Gala at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, MA. Visit this online gallery to share the memories! updated 07/23/07 | 12:38 PM
