M.ED in Science in Education Program

A fully online program for teachers who teach grades 1-8, curriculum specialists and instructional resource persons. May lead to Professional licensure in Elementary (1-6) or Middle School General Science(5-8) in Massachusetts.

• Reflect on your own learning and consider implications for teaching
• Learn to use technology resources to support science learning

Prerequisite: Applicants for Elementary (1-6): Massachusetts Initial license in Elementary Education (1-6) or a signed non-licensure agreement.Applicants for General Science (5-8): Massachusetts Initial license in General Science (5-8) or a signed non-licensure agreement.

Program Design
The 33-credit hour program is comprised of an introductory 3-credit-hour course, Try Science, and five 6-credit-hour modules where students receive 3 credits in science and 3 credits in education. Each module focuses on a particular science domain. Participants engage in scientific investigations to extend their understanding of concepts and skills, rethink teaching and assessment strategies, and try ideas in their own classrooms. In essence, this third element is a built-in practicum.

Co-teaching by a scientist and a science educator
Each module is taught by two instructors:

• a scientist well versed in the science domain of a given module who guides participants in their acquisition of key science content, skills, and values; and,
• a science educator who supports participants as they consider pedagogical strategies for bringing science inquiry into their classrooms.
