When should I take the MTEL test? Please review the Lesley University MTEL policy http://www.lesley.edu/soe/certification/tests.html Any Lesley student enrolled in an Initial Licensure program must take and pass the Communication and Literacy before enrolling in the practicum. You will be required to pass this test only once. You must also take the subject test(s) required in your licenses area(s) before you will be allowed to register for you practicum or field-base experience. You must pass the subject matter test(s) in order to receive a passing grade in the practicum and be endorsed by Lesley. What tests are required for Licensure in Massachusetts? In order to meet the licensure requirements, you must pass the appropriate Massachusetts Test(s) for Educator Licensure (MTEL). A Communication and Literacy test is needed for all types of license (Teachers, specialist teachers, support personnel and administrators). In addition, a Subject matter test is required for all teaching and specialist teaching subject areas. I have already passed an educator test in another state. Do I still need to take the MTEL?Yes, you must take and pass the MTEL. No other licensure test is considered to be comparable to the MTEL. After Aug. 30, 2003 all candidates for licenses in Early Childhood, Elementary Education and Moderate Special Needs programs must take and pass the Foundations of Reading test (NOTE: Candidates for the Teacher of Reading license take General Curriculum instead) Do I send the Department of Education my MTEL test scores?Your scores are automatically reported to the DOE by the testing company (National Evaluation Systems, Inc.) and held in your records as confidential. Are teachers required to take the MTEL test when they apply for certification in a new field ?Educators who hold an Initial license (formerly called Provisional Advanced Standing Certificate) but not a Professional license (formerly called Standard Certificate) in any field, are required to take both the Communication and Literacy Skills Test and a Subject Matter Test if they seek certification in a field other than that for which they hold an Initial license. Please click here to learn more details about adding a license to an existing license https://www4.doemass.org/elar/licensurehelp/LicenseRequirementsCriteriaPageControl.ser I am concerned that I failed the MTEL test. Should I sign up for the next test date before I find out my results? If you are concerned that you might have failed a test, PLEASE DO NOT sign up for the next test date prior to receiving your test scores. If you did fail the test, the late fees are automatically waived when registration deadlines and score reporting dates overlap. If, however, you sign up for the next administration BEFORE you have received your scores and it then turns out that you passed the test, your registration fees will not be reimbursed. This policy is outlined on pages 6 & 7 of the Test Registration Bulletin. Although Lesley Certification Office has attempted to ensure that the information contained on the website is accurate and complete at the time of posting, the contents are subject to change at any time. updated 07/23/07 | 05:16 PM
