What is the Reggio Emilia Approach?
The Reggio Emilia Approach was initially created after World War II, in the small Italian city of Reggio Emilia. The approach focuses on fostering relationships among, children, teachers, parents, and community. It builds on the premise that each child has the desire to connect with others, to engage in learning, and to enter into a relationship with his or her environment. An integral part of the approach is hands-and-minds on exploration of materials and media.

Advanced discussion of innovations in early childhood education and learning from Reggio Emilia, from the basic principles and daily-life experiences to analysis of documentation and assessment. An essential element of positive learning and teaching is to view children and teachers as endowed with strong potential, ready to enter into relationships, to be listened to, and eager to learn. Once we value children and teachers this way, teaching cannot be done solely through imparting information, but rather must be an experience by which teachers and learners construct learning together.
This seminar will focus on observation, documentation and shared interpretations among teachers and with children. These are powerful tools for teaching and learning in the early childhood classroom. They create a sense of well being in the learning environment; provide for authentic assessment; involve parents; and advance the professional development of teachers.
