Contemporary Drawing: Collage and Mixed Media
Santiago Hernandez, bio | This course offers students the opportunity to explore the recent evolution and role of drawing in contemporary art. Students will also look at some of the trends, techniques and methods utilized by contemporary practitioners of the art of drawing including the use of mixed media and collage. Using the work of artists such as Nancy Spero, Wangechi Mutu, Arturo Herrera, and Julie Mehretu as examples, we will explore a diversity of styles and techniques from abstraction to working with the figure to drawing as installation. As an example, one of the assignments includes a twist on the traditional self-portrait genre. This self-portrait will be a conceptual depiction of the notion of the self as a cultural construct.

Digital Storytelling
Kevin Keaney | Storytelling has long been a way for us to share our life experiences, ideas, and imagination to each other. Combining words, images and sound, the digital storyteller documents a life experience, idea or feeling to engage the audience in their "virtual reality." We live in a unique time in History; a time when storytellers from around the world can share their stories instantly to a massive audience. In this class, students will explore and experiment with the methods and techniques used in traditional and digital storytelling and the computer technologies available, including Adobe Photoshop and Apple's iMovie. Emphasis will be placed on digital art creation, storytelling, story sharing and its creative potential within society and the classroom. No computer experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn, share, and create!

Color Digital
Ben Sloat, bio | This course explores the potential of digital capture and output to transform the medium of color photography both aesthetically and technically. With the creation of the camera raw file format, the traditional pre-exposure concerns of color balance, and exposure, have now become post-exposure choices for the artist. Color Digital will investigate the artistic implications of this malleability of image capture following through to improved controls and archival quality attainable in digital color photography.

Large Format
Dana Mueller, bio | The large format camera has long been the favored by serious photographers when issues of clarity and tonality become paramount in image making. This course allows intermediate/advanced students to explore the creative capabilities of the 4 x 5 (or 8 x 10) view camera. In addition to classroom discussions and demos, we will meet and work outdoors as a class. We will also investigate the Zone System of exposure and development, using a special computer program prepared by the instructor. Students will acquire a familiarity with large format cameras, gain a greater understanding of exposure/development parameters, and produce a portfolio of original, self-defined work. The school provides all cameras, lenses, tripods, and film holders.

Artists Who Teach: Landscape Painting, Exploration in Sculpture and Mixed Media or Monotype Printmaking
Tony Apesos, bio | Tim Peck | Ann Hirsch | Artists Who Teach is a one-week summer intensive course designed for artists who are also art educators and have limited time to create their own work in a focused environment during the academic year. The course offers artists a comprehensive residency experience in a shorter period of time. From Monday to Saturday, studio work, workshops, demonstrations, and critique combine to provide a total immersion experience in an urban setting of contemporary art. Artists choose among three disciplines that are offered: Landscape Painting, Exploration in Sculpture and Mixed Media, or Monotype Printmaking. Participants will propose and present their own objectives. Demonstrations will provide a base for learning new techniques to deepen personal studio work and may also be developed for classroom experiences. Participants will produce a portfolio of work that will be presented for a final critique scheduled at the conclusion of the week on Saturday, July 21, 2012. Public transportation is the best choice to commute to/from AIB. Parking options are limited. Room and board options are available at Lesley University residencies in Cambridge.

Works on Paper: Expanding Fluency through Technique
Joan Ryan, bio | This course is designed for artists and art educators who are interested in infusing and informing their individual practice with a variety of expressive mediums that expand their existing repertoire of techniques. Demonstrations will include pen and ink, monotype printing, photo transfer process, watercolor, and assemblage/collage. Participants may choose one or more new techniques to incorporate into their professional work while they expand and strengthen their resources as teachers. Each day will begin with a morning session that introduces new materials, methods, demonstrations and historical aspects of the medium. Consideration of works by contemporary artists challenge participants to develop their personal artist vision in ways that demonstrate a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and meaning. Afternoon sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to select from and apply processes within their own professional work. Exploration of new practices will provide the means to further explore ideas and develop a unique body of work. In this session diversity of practice and innovation is encouraged. Students' experimentation and interpretation during the afternoon sessions should connect to a new understanding of the art making processes. Students may choose to work from life (landscape, still life), imagine or previously established content. Evening sessions will be group critiques and prompted discussions where students show work from the day and discuss concepts, discoveries, challenges, and contexts within the contemporary art world. Participants will produce a final portfolio that demonstrates an investigation into a more personal artist sensibility. These ideas and images of work will be presented for a final critique/seminar at AIB scheduled on September 24, 2011. This artist residency will be held at the College of the Atlantic, which overlooks Frenchman Bay and Bar Island in Bar Harbor, Maine. Participants are responsible for their own transportation to and from Bar Harbor.

IPHOTO 2322-01 | IPHOTO 5322-01 | IXPHO 5311-01 | RegisterThe principal goal of this course is to describe how the brain rather than the eye sees and how the brain interprets images both emotionally and intellectually. In discussing the physiology of vision I will describe the physics of the light spectrum, the visual and neurological basis for vision and conclude with the cognitive basis for photography in interpreting the meaning of images. Concepts will be delivered in a practical manner with students making images (in selected locations), drawing on photographic theory, and analyzing them in class during daily critiques. Thus, the course content will cover the basic practical aspects of making photographic images. This approach will be the background for discussing the role photography plays in our personal reactions to events, in shaping social consciousness and how it affects public policy by its use in photojournalism, advertising, war and pornography. This course is a travel course that takes place in Paris, France. Students must bring a digital camera and a laptop or iPad for reviews.
