Power of the Image in German Photography and Film
JUL 7 - AUG 8, M, W, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm and F, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Dana Meuller
LOIS# 36423
3 Credits

This course explores visual and cultural meanings in German film and photography of the 20th century. The history of modern Germany has been marked by tremendous social and political upheaval, including economic depression, two devastating world wars, and a country divided from 1945 until 1989. The re-united Germany now struggles with an identity that seeks to come to terms with the shame of the past while looking to the future.  We will study the work of German photographers and filmmakers in the light of this complex history.  Discussions about their artistic productions will be complemented by relevant philosophical, literary and critical texts. Highlights of the course will include work by August Sander, Fritz Lang, Leni Riefenstahl, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, Anselm Kiefer, Thomas Struth, Thomas Ruff and Andreas Gursky.

Storytelling has long been a way for us to share our life experiences, ideas and imagination to each other. Combining words, images and sound, the storyteller shares a piece of themselves and engages the audience in their ‘virtual reality’.  We live in a unique time in History; a time when storytellers from around the world can share their stories instantly to a massive audience. In this class, students will explore and experiment with the methods and techniques used in storytelling and the new digital technologies available, including Photoshop, PowerPoint and I movie. No computer experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn, share and create!

The large format camera has long been the favored by serious photographers when issues of clarity and tonality become paramount in image making. This course allows intermediate/advanced students to explore the creative capabilities of the 4 x 5 (or 8x10) view camera. In addition to classroom discussions and demos, we will meet and work outdoors as a class. We will also investigate the Zone System of exposure and development, using a special computer program prepared by the instructor. Students will acquire a familiarity with large format cameras, gain a greater understanding of exposure/development parameters, and produce a portfolio of original, self-defined work. The school provides all cameras, lenses, tripods, and film holders.

With the creation of the camera raw file format, the traditional pre-exposure concerns of color balance, and exposure, have now become post-exposure choices for the artist. Color: Digital will investigate the artistic implications of this malleability of image capture following through to improved controls and archival quality attainable in digital color photography.

Each class will meet at a different location throughout the city (weather permitting) to paint directly on site in either a park or an urban setting. We will discuss how to deal with the practical issues of painting outside as well as come up with economical, compact and convenient alternatives to expensive and cumbersome outdoor painting gear. Once outfitted and in the field, we will explore color and how it functions to create a specific sensation of space, form, light and atmosphere in a landscape painting through an efficient direct painting approach.  As the class progresses we will discuss how to develop our paintings in the studio to maximize the intended effect experienced on site.

Located at the very end of Cape Cod, this arts colony hosts one of the nation's most well respected artist residency programs.  The Art Institute Of Boston at Lesley University has an affiliation with FAWC where students enrolled in FAWC can earn BFA credits.  Each year, more than 80 courses in visual arts, poetry and creative writing are offered.  See www.FAWC.org for a complete course and faculty listing.

Announcing AIB's new Art History Minor

The Art History Minor is designed to enrich the BFA degree by offering you the opportunity to enhance the training in your chosen artistic specialty with a more focused study of the history and theory of art. Many students will welcome the opportunity to delve more deeply into art of other eras and cultures and to further develop their critical and writing skills as a natural complement to their own art making. Because Art History is already a significant required component of all AIB students' education, the additional requirements for the Minor can easily be fulfilled. For information regarding the eligibility, application and program requirements, contact Susan Ashbrook at 617.585.6775 or email ashbrook@aiboston.edu.
