Call Numbers are Like Addresses
Each book in a library has a unique call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library.
Lesley University, like many academic libraries in the US, uses Library of Congress Classification (LC) for call numbers.
As you may have noticed, the LC system uses a combination of letters and numbers to arrange materials by subject.
Other libraries use different systems, such as the Dewey Decimal System, which primarily uses numbers.
When you know one call number, you can browse the shelves for books on similar topics.
Here are some sample call numbers in the two systems. The actual number of an individual book will be longer.
