Residence Hall Internet Access

The residence halls at Lesley University offer students the opportunity to connect to the school's high speed network from the convenience of their room. Every student living on campus is provided with one high speed network port in their room, and may register one computer on the Lesley network for no additional fee.

Getting Started

Requirements

There are no minimum requirements for connecting a computer to the network. However, if you require assistance, computers on anything below Macintosh OS X or Windows XP are not supported. We do reserve the right to require any Windows security patches deemed necessary for the health of the network. In order to get connected, you will need:

  • An installed Ethernet card - most computers purchased within the past few years will have one already installed
  • An Ethernet Cable
  • Your Lesley username and password

Setup

When you get to your room, look for the white network jack on the wall. Plug your Ethernet cable into the red network port on the jack. To finish setting up your Internet connection, do the following:

  • Open a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari.
  • If you do not immediately get a Lesley registration page, go to http://netreg.lesley.edu.
  • Choose to download a free copy of Symantec Anti-Virus or continue your registration.
  • Enter your new Lesley username and password, and click "Accept."
  • Restart your computer.

Wireless

Although some students may experience bleedover signal from common areas on campus, access to Lesley's wireless network is not currently available in the student residence halls. Your network port provides you with a more reliable higher speed connection than wireless access, allowing for faster responses on the Internet. For security purposes, Lesley does not allow personal non-Lesley network devices such as routers or wireless access points onto the network. We reserve the right to shut down any such unauthorized devices found on campus.

Policies

Residential student use of the Internet is governed by Lesley's Electronic Environment Policy.

By registering your computer on the network, you agree to the terms of the policy and assume responsibility for the use of that computer on the network. For this reason, we discourage students from using their user name and password to register someone else's computer on the network.

Lesley allows for only one computer connection per student. However, students who require more than one registered computer to fulfill specific educational goals should contact University Technology by phone at 617.349.8770 and we will attempt to accommodate your needs.

Please note that students are responsible for maintaining their own computers, including updating Windows with critical security patches, regularly updating and running Anti-Virus protection, and updating and running anti-spyware software.

Troubleshooting

Incorrect Password Error When Registering

First, make sure you are using your Lesley University username and password. This would be the same as your email, LOIS, or myLesley username and password. If you are still unable to register, please click on the "Please reset my password" link provided on the screen and follow the onscreen instructions.

Cannot Get to the Registration Page

If after you have plugged your computer's Ethernet Cable into the wall you still cannot get the Lesley Network registration page, here are a few things you can check:

  • Restart your computer.
  • Check to see if others in your house are experiencing a problem too.
  • Make sure your Ethernet cable is securely fastened both to the computer and to the wall.
  • Make sure the cable you are using is an Ethernet cable, not a telephone cable.
  • Borrow a friend's Ethernet cable and see if it works. If it does, you may need to purchase a new cable.
  • Make sure your computer is properly configured for the network.
  • If you still cannot get the registration screen, call University Technology at 617.349.8770.

Restricted from the Network

If a computer is causing a disruption on the network due to infection or inappropriate use, it may be restricted from the network by University Technology for the protection of other users. If you have been restricted, please call University Technology at 617.349.8770 and we will discuss your options with you.

Error 38 "The computer name you specified is already in use on the network."

Changing your computer's name usually solves this problem. To change your computer's name, follow these instructions:

  • Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon.
  • Choose Properties and click the Identification tab.
  • Change the Computer Name field to your email username (i.e. jsmith).
  • Click OK until you are back at your computer's desktop.
  • Restart your computer.
