Outgoing Calls

Our phone system requires some specific actions, for example, to dial off-campus or to activate touch-tone dialing to interact with outside menu systems.

Placing a Telephone Call

When no lines are in use:

If either line is in use:
Lift handset, press button for the line that's free, and dial the internal or external number.

Dialing Internal Numbers

For extensions starting with 8xxx or 6xxx:

  • Dial the four-digit extension.

For extensions starting with 3xxx:

  1. Dial 2222.
  2. When you hear the voicemail system, dial *.
  3. Dial the four-digit extension.

If calling a 3xxx extension from off-campus, dial 617.868.9600 first and then follow the directions above.

Dialing Local External Numbers

All calls in the 617, 857, 781, and 339 area codes:

  • Dial 9, the area code, and the seven-digit number.

Dialing Long Distance, Toll Free, & International Numbers

Long distance, external calls:

  • Dial * 6 *, your authorization code, # 9, the area code, the number.

PLEASE NOTE: Never use 0.

Toll free numbers - area codes 800 and 888:

  • Dial 9 and then the 800 or 888 toll free number.

International numbers:

  • Dial * 6 *, your authorization code, # 9, 011, country code, city code, and the number.

PLEASE NOTE: Your authorization code must be authorized for international calls.

Barred or Blocked Numbers

You may occasionally dial an external number and find that you are unable to get through because the number is barred or blocked. Users with display screens on their phones will see the message "Barred Number" and all users will hear an obnoxious, repeating alert noise. Often a number is barred because the area code is new and has not yet been programmed into the system.

When this happens, please email us at phones@lesley.edu. Include in the message the 10-digit number and the name, city, and state of the person you are trying to call. We will respond to your message, and reprogram the system if necessary, within 24 hours.

Conference Calls

Please see our detailed information on conference calls.

Operator Assistance

Lesley switchboard assistance:

  • Dial 0 for the switchboard.

Verizon Operator assistance:

  • Dial * 6 *, your authorization code, # 9 0.

PLEASE NOTE: It may be several moments before you hear the Verizon operator.

International Operator assistance and information:

  • To obtain, confirm, complete, or get assistance connecting to an international telephone number, dial * 6 *, your authorization code, # 9 0 0. This will connect you to an MCI operator. MCI is the international and long distance carrier for Lesley, and will provide assistance.

Personal calling card assistance:

If you find an 800 assistance number on the back of your calling card, dial it using the instructions above. If there is no 800 assistance number, call the Verizon operator and ask to be connected to the operator of your own calling card company. This will ensure that your call will be billed at the rates of your own company.

Touch Tone

Normally, your phone is not in the touch-tone mode, and therefore cannot interact with an outside company's voicemail system.

To activate touch-tone, first place your call. Once you are connected:

Beige-colored Ericsson phones, all models: Press the touch-tone button. This is always the upper right hand corner button.
Alternately, press 9. Black Ericsson phones, all models: Press 9.

If You Reach Lesley Voicemail

If you reach a Lesley voicemail recording, you have the following options:

  • Leave a voicemail message.
  • Bypass listening to the greeting of an individual to leave your message more quickly. To do this, press *. You will hear the system say "Recording." Leave your message as usual.
  • Dial the next desired extension at any point, without hanging up or redialing.

To Program a Frequently Called Number

If your phone does not have two rows of buttons to the right of the number buttons:

  1. Leave the receiver down.
  2. Press the Acc2/Inq key. (The light will go on.)
  3. Press the vacant line button to be used.
  4. Enter the telephone number, including your long distance calling code if necessary. See long distance instructions above.
  5. Press the vacant line button again. (The light will go off.)
  6. Press the Acc2/Inq key again. (The light will go off.)

If your phone does have two rows of buttons to the right of the number buttons:

  1. Leave the receiver down.
  2. Press the Program key. (The light will go on.)
  3. Press the vacant line button to be used. Choose one of the 12 buttons that isn't already in use as a line button.
  4. Enter the telephone number, including your long distance calling code if necessary. See long distance instructions above.
  5. Press the vacant line button again. (The light will go off.)
  6. Press the Program key again. (The light will go off.)

To use this feature, press the line button you programmed.

To erase an old number, reprogram anything over the old number, e.g., two stars, or a new number.

PLEASE NOTE: We recommend that you do not program your long distance calling code by itself. Lesley policy requires that you do not share your long distance calling code with others to protect against unauthorized use.

Automatic Call Back (Internal Calls Only)

If an extension you're dialing is busy:

  • Dial 6 and hang up.

PLEASE NOTE: You'll know this feature has successfully engaged when you hear a double tone just after you dial 6. This feature won't work if the extension you're calling has been programmed to divert to voicemail when busy and you won't hear the double tone.

When the extension becomes free, your phone will ring (short, quick rings for 8 seconds). Pick up the receiver while it's still ringing. You'll hear the phone system ringing the extension for you.

You can have several "call backs" activated at once.

To cancel a single call back:

  • Lift handset, dial # 6 *, the extension, then #.

To cancel all call backs:

  • Lift handset and dial # 6 #.

Auto-Redial

To automatically redial the last external number you dialed (long distance calling code included):

  • Pick up receiver, press * * *.

PLEASE NOTE: This will not redial Lesley extensions.
