Here in the UT- Labs & Classrooms division, we take great pride in our student work staff.
Each year, we hire a group of talented technology advocates who serve as our in-the-field representatives and support specialists. Workers in the Labs & Classrooms office are given a the opportunity to take a more hands-on approach to aquiring 21st century job skills; are put into situations that require analytical reasoning; and are able to gain valuable insights on the operational policies and procedures that help keep this university up and running.

Students who work in our office receive real-world IT experience in User Support, Desktop Administration, Audio/Visual systems, Networking, Digital Media Production, and MUCH more.

Who we are looking for

In general, we believe that anyone can learn and be trained in our information systems.

An ideal candidate for any of our student tech positions would exhibit:

  • a desire to "figure things out" independently using available resources
  • a strong sense of accountability and ownership in the university
  • the ability to reason and solve problems in a logical fashion
  • connection to the community through groups/advocacy
  • a willingness to help others and to share/educate their peers and colleagues

*We are looking for students who will not only learn how to fix things.... We are looking for students who will become technology leaders by setting examples and supporting the community.

We hire both Federal Work Study (FWS) and Lesley Works (LW) candidates based on need, availability, and skills.

Typically, we have two classifications of student employees:

Student Technical Assistant

From the Student Employment Website:
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Technology Support Services & Classroom and Labs Coordinator, in conjunction with technical staff; assist in the maintenance and support of all University Technology equipment, including Macintosh and Windows workstations, printers, peripherals and audio/visual equipment in classrooms/at University events. This position will also assist the Classroom and Labs Coordinator with the equipment reservation process.

Typically, these individuals are the primary on-location service call person. He/she would be knowledgeable enough to work through most troubleshooting situations and will be responsible for routine checks of the classroom equipment. Great for 1st or 2nd year students looking to learn more about campus technologies and to work with faculty from all schools/disciplines.

Senior Technical Assistant

From the Student Employment Website:
Under the direction of the Supervisor of Technology Support Services & Classroom and Labs Coordinator, in conjunction with technical staff; assist in the maintenance and support of all University Technology equipment, including Macintosh and Windows workstations, printers, peripherals, audio/visual equipment. This position will also mentor, train, schedule and support University Technology's Student Technical Assistants. The Senior Student Technical Assistant will also have knowledge of the Student Technical Assistant position, and will assist the Classroom and Labs Coordinator with the equipment reservation process, classroom communication, event coordination for A.V. support, and other projects.

Typically, this individual directly assists the Labs & Classrooms Coordinator with scheduling staff and organizing special events/materials. The Senior Tech is the key Administrative Assistant for the office and may assist with things like communication with workers, marketing/PR, training/documentation, and making sure time cards are submitted. This position is great for Graduate Student(s) who would be looking to become a semi-permanent fixture and gain some management skills. *A laptop workstation will be provided.

Requirements

Our student staff must be willing to learn, and have a desire to increase technical knowledge. Familiarity with Mac and Windows computers and software applications is preferred, but not required. The person must be detail-oriented, with the ability to take direction, work independently, and communicate clearly. Strong organizational and customer service skills are necessary. Writing, design, & multimedia experience is a plus. Some weekend hours required.
