The Threshold Program's second-year curriculum focuses on developing workplace and independent living skills through expanded internships, advising, and continued coursework.
All second-year students in the Threshold program take courses in food preparation, apartment living, consumer education, and other topics to get the skills needed for independent living and paid employment. Year 2 is when you'll also pursue 1 of 2 majors—Business Services or Early Childhood—for your Vocational Education and Training.
Students in both majors work at job sites in their field and take related coursework for 2 semesters. Similar to your vocational experience in Year 1, your advisor meets with you regularly, visits your work site to observe, and discusses your progress with your on-site work supervisor. In Year 2, you'll spend more time each week in field placement than you did in Year 1.
Business Services Major (2 semesters, 3–4 hours/week of coursework and 15–18 hours/week in field placement)
You'll continue learning the skills needed to work in an entry-level position in general office, retail, hospitality, and food service.
Business Services majors do their fieldwork both on and off campus aspart of their vocational education and training. Here, one of our studentsis interning in a doggie daycare.
Early Childhood Major (2 semesters, 3–4 hours/week of coursework and 15–18 hours/week in field placement)You'll continue learning about the early childhood classroom, child development, and classroom management. This major prepares you for a career as a teacher's aid in a daycare center or nursery school.
Early Childhood majors do fieldwork in local daycare centers and nursery schools as part of their vocational education and training.
Work World Seminar (2 semesters, 50 minutes/week)Students in both majors take this seminar where we focus on the social and practical skills necessary for getting and maintaining employment:

"I found the program to be a great learning experience. It teaches you everyday independent living skills. The classes I found most helpful were money management and cooking. Laundry skills are important, too. The Threshold teachers and staff are very dedicated and caring individuals. They are always around for you if you need them for any type of questions. Don't be afraid to use all they have to offer. The staff does a great job teaching you the skills to live on your own."
Katie D., Class of 2000
