Vocational Education and Training
- First-year students explore both early childhood and business and support services majors, spending one term completing course work and field placement work in each
- Field placement offers students an opportunity to use the skills and theoretical material learned in their classes
- In addition to an on-site supervisor, each student is assigned a Threshold vocational advisor who:
- Meets with him or her on campus
- Visits the field placement for observations
- And consults with the on-site supervisor regarding student progress
- Business and Support Services prepares students for entry-level positions in:
- General office/retail;
- Food service; and
- Hospitality.
- Field sites are available both on campus and in local businesses and industries
- Early Childhood Studies
prepares students to be:
- Aides/assistants in day care centers and nursery
schools.
- Early Childhood field sites are within area day care centers
and nursery schools.
Courses
Business and Support Services
Students learn general business skills in the areas of:
- Hospitality
- Food service
- Retail
Courses provide both classroom and hands-on experience.
For Business and Support Services Majors,
two semesters of Business and Support Services course work are required.
Early Childhood
In Early Childhood coursework, students are introduced to:
- The early childhood environment
- Child development
- Appropriate classroom management techniques
For Early Childhood Majors, three semesters
of Early Childhood course work are required.
Computer Applications
Students:
- Learn to strengthen, refine, and extend their existing computer skills
- Use MS Word on PCs or Macs to become familiar with a variety of documents
- Explore additional computer applications such as File Maker Pro, Excel and PowerPoint
Internet Safety & Basic Computer Maintenance
Students learn:
- How to safely and effectively use technology and the Internet in their coursework and personal lives
- About social and ethical issues related to the proper use of technology
- Virus and anti-spyware protection programs
- Basic maintenance of personal computers and printers
Introduction to Work World
This course offers students practical instruction on:
- Developing effective work habits and professional behavior
- Understanding workplace relations and issues relevant to providing customer/client service
Word Processing
This course provides students with an overview of basic word-processing skills and email training, using both PCs and Macs.
