The Wingspread Conferences

UMass, CITI, and Lesley Logos

PROCEEDINGS:
The Wingspread II Conference
A two-day conference to plan for K-20 education in Massachusetts
Held at the UMass facility in Shrewsbury

Wingspread Two was a working conference to develop a "working plan" for an IT fluent of our Commonwealth. Wingspread One, a one-day event, was designed to be inspirational. The two-day Wingspread II event was more operational.

A term so many of us have been using for years--technology integration--has morphed into two terms: IT Fluency and ITAC (Information Technology Across the Curriculum ) These terms describe what many of us in the Commonwealth have been doing for many years.

As Jim Lengel noted in his opening address:

We have to build a virtual learning community for teachers; engage multiple teachers in a district and engage administrators. ... We need a paradigm shift and it is more than the schools; it is a cultural issue.

The Wingspread II Conference Proceedings are available for download in .pdf format. The document is in three parts: The Main document, Appendix A, and Appendices B and C. The three files are parts of one document and are paginated continuously (1-16, 17-18, and 19-39). To download:

PROCEEDINGS:
The Wingspread Conference
A One-Day Invitational Conference
Inventing the Next Phase: A T of STEM in our Schools
October 17, 2005 at the Sturbridge Host Hotel
Supported by CITI

The ever-evolving capacities of technology applications suggest new possibilities for teaching and learning. Educators need to consider the short and long-term impact of emerging technology and its influence on the economy, now and in the future, as they steer a course for their schools.

It is clear to everyone involved in education that to learn and develop, one needs the knowledge and inspiration of people who are thinking beyond the daily demands, and who have developed an expertise which is different from our own...yet has enormous potential to affect what we do. ...

We are particularly interested... in ways in which technology makes teaching and learning more productive and engaging to reach students and get them to think about pursuing knowledge and skills which lead to careers in these highly important fields.

You may remember Computer Literacy, then technology integration. Recently another term has emerged-IT fluency-which refers to using the technology to identify, study and solve problems and to collaborate and communicate, all essential skills in the 21st century. That is the direction in which we want our thinking to move.
