STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Rachel Sellers Bordelon, Ph.D, enjoys teaching ECOMP 7010 Emerging Technologies and ECOMP 5100 Computers, Technology and Education both face to face and online. She tells us, "I've been fortunate to work side-by-side with some of the finest educators across the country. Each teaching experience has presented opportunities for professional growth and avenues for implementing new pedagogical strategies." Her instruction in these courses is strengthened by her previous work with the Louisiana State Department of Education as the project coordinator for the Louisiana Educational Advancement and Development (LEADTech) project in which she provided school principals and district superintendents with in-depth understanding of the role of instructional technology for total school improvement.

Dr. Bordelon's colleagues and students admire the instruction she provides in both courses. Dr. Judi Mathis Johnson, faculty mentor of ECOMP 5100, strongly praises Dr. Bordelon's patience and ability to stay current in the field of technology in education. Dr. Johnson's statement that "Dr. Bordelon's students are fortunate to begin the program under her instruction," speaks volumes about Rachel's excellence as a teacher. Dr. Brenda Matthis, faculty mentor for ECOMP 7010 Emerging Technologies notes that the course is never taught the same way twice and tells us "Rachel is always on the search for new tools and technology concepts to introduce in the course. She conceived and designed the iPod Project, which expands the educators' knowledge of adapting this globally-used technology for the classroom." Additionally, Dr. Matthis shares that "It is unusual and quite unique to have an adjunct faculty who is equally facile at teaching both the educator who is a novice at technology and the hardcore technology specialist. [Dr. Bordelon understands] the pedagogies involved in both worlds." Student comments such as "Rachel is a great instructor," and "She always asked whether everyone understands before starting a project," show that students realize how fortunate they are to study with Dr. Bordelon.

Dr. Bordelon has presented at conferences such as National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Committee Meetings. She has also served on the Louisiana State Technology Planning Committee, Louisiana Board of Examiners' Training Commission, Microsoft's Teachers Training Grant Project, K-12 Online Resources Project, and the Title I Steering Committee. Her other contributions to the field include the publication of a book chapter, "Professional Development Recommendations for Online Course Designers" in Development and Management of Virtual Schools edited by Cavanaugh (2003) and the presentation of a paper entitled Skills, Modifications, and Obstacles: Teaching Online Courses at the High School Level with the 2002 Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education International Conference.

For her ability to keep up with the newest technologies and to impart her knowledge to a range of learners, we salute Dr. Rachel Sellers Bordelon as an Outstanding Adjunct Faculty.
