Middle School Education Programs Leading to Inital Licensure
Students entering Middle School Master's programs leading to Initial licensure must have a Bachelor's or Master's degree with a major in their field of concentration, or have passed the MTEL content exam in their field of concentration. While taking coursework and before the practicum, each student must complete 75 hours of a structured, early field experience, in which the student spends one full day per week in a middle school classroom in their subject area under the guidance of a supervising practitioner. Courses include pre-practicum field-based assignments that are listed on syllabi and documented by students. These assignments are done in a variety of settings. Students maintain a detailed journal of reflections of these experiences, which may become part of their portfolios.
The Middle School programs leading to Massachusetts Initial Licensure are available in seven subject areas: English, Humanities, History, Mathematics, Mathematics/Science, Political Science/Political Philosophy, and General Science. There is also an English (5-8) and Specialist Teacher in Reading program, as well as Teacher of Visual Art. Please refer to the individual programs of study for more information.
