Frequently Asked Questions

Initial Licensure Programs

What are the requirements for entrance into the initial licensure program for teaching middle school?
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the same subject as the teaching license you intend to get or a Bachelor's degree in any area and pass the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) test for the subject area in which you intend to be licensed to teach.

Does Lesley University require Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) scores in order to apply to its initial licensure programs?
No. You will need to submit an application for admission, a written personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and proof of a Bachelor's degree in the subject area you intend to teach, OR a Bachelor's degree in any subject area and have passed the MTEL test in the intended subject area.

Where can I get more information about the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)?
Go to Lesley's Certification Office page for information about how to apply for a license, where you can obtain materials to prepare for the test, workshop dates, and more.

In what subject areas does Lesley University offer middle school initial licensure?
Lesley offers Master's degrees leading to initial licensure in general science, humanities, political science/political philosophy, mathematics/science, English, mathematics, and history.

When can I start a program?
You can start in any semester: fall, spring, or summer.

How many courses would I take each semester?
There is no requirement, but most part-time students take two classes per semester, and full-time students take four per semester. Courses are given in the evening on campus, one night per week. Please note that to qualify for financial aid you must enroll in a minimum number of credits per semester. Please call Student Financial Services at (800) 999-1959 ext. 8710 for more information.

How long does it take to complete the program?
For students taking two courses each semester, including the summer, it takes two years to complete one of these programs. Full-time students can complete the program within 12-18 months. Students at Lesley University need to complete Master's degree requirements within 7 years. We strongly suggest that you complete your chosen program while the state requirements are still the same.

Can I transfer any courses from other institutions to Lesley?
Yes, up to six graduate level credits may be transferred in and count toward your program requirement if the courses are appropriate to your program of study. You must apply for this transfer of credits upon admission into the program. You will need to submit a catalog description and a syllabus of the course you have taken at the other institution, along with an official transcript.

Is there a mandated order in which the courses need to be taken?
No. There is a preferred order but not a mandated one. Contact your academic advisor at the beginning of your program to set up a course schedule that is right for you.

What distinguishes Lesley's middle school program from programs offered by other institutions?
Most programs offered at other institutions are either secondary or elementary school programs that only offer one middle school course. Lesley University offers a unique program that is solely about middle school practice and features courses that address the specific needs of middle school teachers.
