early childhood educationThe Early Childhood Education programs at Lesley University are designed to engage students with educational theory and hands-on application. At the heart of the programs is respect for the competence and curiosity of young children. Students will develop skills that prepare them to teach and learn with children in classroom contexts. Programs include a focus on curriculum that challenges students as unique individuals and stresses inclusive practices. Programs are offered on and off campus and through the Collaborative Internship Programs. Lesley offers Early Childhood Education Master's programs leading to initial and professional licensure. Students with Master's degrees may also choose the 12-credit option for professional licensure. Initial Licensure Programs with Master's DegreesThe Early Childhood Initial Licensure programs provide students with theoretical and applied experience that prepares them to teach in preK-2 classrooms. Throughout the program, an appreciation for the whole child is developed in collaboration with peers, instructors, and practitioners in the field. Field experiences and ongoing portfolio development build a foundation of curriculum knowledge across disciplines. Upon successful completion of the program and the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) requirements, students are eligible for initial licensure to teach in Massachusetts public schools.
Professional Licensure Programs with Master's DegreesThe Early Childhood Professional Licensure programs expose students to advanced levels of curriculum development, as well as current issues and challenges beyond the scope of an initial license. Areas such as policy, behavior, and multiculturalism are emphasized. Practical classroom experiences enhance material presented in course sessions, and an appreciation for the teacher as researcher and advocate is fostered.
12-credit Option for Professional Licensure (Post-Master's)For those who already hold Master's degrees, 12 credits of graduate coursework in the subject matter knowledge of the Initial license can be used to meet part of the requirements for the Professional license in that field. This is an individual option listed in the Massachusetts state regulations and not an approved program. Those interested in taking advantage of this option should consult with an Assistant Director of Academic Advising in the School of Education before enrolling in courses. updated 03/12/08 | 05:56 PM
