Early Childhood Education
Early Childhood Education
The Early Childhood Education programs at Lesley University are designed to provide students with the skills, educational theory, and hands-on application that prepare them to teach and learn with children in PreK-2 classroom contexts. Programs focus on curriculum that challenges students as unique individuals and that stresses inclusive practices. At the heart of the programs is respect for the competence and curiosity of young children. Read the Early Childhood Mission Statement.
Programs leading to Initial and Professional licensure are offered on and off campus, as well as through the Collaborative Internship Programs. Programs are offered at Lesley's Cambridge campus, as well as at selected off-campus sites. Through the Lesley Center for the Adult Learner (LCAL), students wishing to acquire a Bachelor's degree may take a Bachelor's program with an Early Childhood minor that can lead to Initial Licensure.
Master's Degrees Leading to Initial Licensure
In the Initial Licensure programs, students develop an appreciation for the whole child, in collaboration with peers, instructors, and practitioners in the field. Field experiences and ongoing portfolio development build a foundation of curriculum knowledge across disciplines. Upon successful completion of the program and the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) requirements, students are eligible for Initial licensure to teach in Massachusetts public schools. Full-time students can complete the program in two summers plus a fall and spring semester (four semesters minimum). Students may also pursue the program on a part-time basis.

Master's Degrees Leading to Professional Licensure
The Early Childhood Professional Licensure programs expose students to advanced levels of curriculum development, as well as current issues and challenges beyond the scope of an Initial license. Areas such as policy, behavior, and multiculturalism are emphasized. Practical classroom experiences enhance material presented in course sessions, and an appreciation for the teacher as researcher and advocate is fostered.

12-credit Option for Professional Licensure (Post-Master's)
For those who already hold Master's degrees, 12 credits of graduate coursework in the subject matter knowledge of the Initial license can be used to meet part of the requirements for the Professional license in that field. This is an individual option listed in the Massachusetts state regulations and not an approved program. Those interested in taking advantage of this option should consult with an Assistant Director of Academic Advising in the School of Education before enrolling in courses.
