Campus Recycling InformationNew! Cell phone and battery recycling all year long! All old cell phone and alkaline/lithium batteries are now being collected on an ongoing basis in UHall, 3rd floor near the cafe, in the Student Center, 1st floor near the main entrance and AIB -700 Beacon Street Cafe. What is Single Stream(Zero Sort) Recycling?Single Stream (also known as "Zero-Sort) recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers and containers are mixed together in a collection truck, instead of being sorted into separate commodities (newspaper, cardboard, plastic, glass etc.) by the resident and handled separately throughout the collection process. In single stream, both the collection and processing systems must be designed to handle this fully commingled mixture of recyclables. In 2009, FCR renovated their recycling plant in Charlestown MA to become a 100% solid Single Stream Recycler. TOUR GROUPS ARE WELCOME! Please email Sue Wisniewski swisniew@lesley.edu if you are interested in setting up a tour with the facility! For more information on our recycling vendor and Single Stream recycling visit the Casella website. Recycling Guidelines:
Lesley is a community filled with individuals with deep, personal commitments to lessen our footprint on the environment. Working together, we know we can foster a working environment that will make good habits easier to develop. Please contact green@lesley.edu or swisniew@lesley.edu with any questions, suggestions or concerns. Remember to check out our "Recycling" page for University recycling procedures. If you are a Cambridge Resident but not living or working on campus, refer to the Cambridge City Recycling Policies and Procedures. Composting on Campus:Since October, 2008 - Lesley University is now composting all food waste (including food prep waste) from White Hall Dining Commons AND food prep waste from the Washburn Cafe. Save That Stuff comes multiple times a week to pick up our food waste and carries it off site to a composting facility -which in about one year's time, your food scraps are turned into "Black Gold Fertilizer". This fertile soil is then sold to local farmers in the northeastern region of Massachusetts. COMPOSTING NOW AT THE STUDENT CENTER! Have you noticed the changes in the way we throw out our waste in the Student Center? We have organized our waste collection bins to designate one built-in set for composting, and the other built-in set for trash and recycling. The area adjacent to the vending machines has been designated as the composting collection station where you can throw out your food scraps, including your food service items -posted on the wall above the built-in. Everything else (not itemized on the built-in) must be thrown in the 1/2 moon shaped trash container infront of composting station. (Food boats, condiment packets, soup cups and lids are not a compostable item in the Student Center - We are working on upgrading certain products to a compostable alternative soon!) This system is still a work in progress and we are trying to make the system run as well as we possibly can. We have added a small recycling container to the composting station for foil. Please help us out in our learning process and do your best to add to the compost that will help grow vegetation instead of the trash that helps grow the landfills! We have also expanded our food prep composting program to the University Hall Restaurant tenants. They average 4.0 tons of food prep compost-able material a month! JOB WELL DONE! updated 11/18/11 | 05:23 PM
