Independent schools vary widely in size, structure, and philosophy and serve students from a variety of economic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Some are progressive and innovative, some are conservative and traditional; some are day schools, others are boarding. They can be single sex or coeducational, sectarian or nonsectarian. Independent schools share a commitment to excellence in all aspects of the education experience. Unlike public schools that are part of a large governmental system, independent schools are autonomous institutions, governed by a board of trustees and supported by private funds.
