Organization description: A non-profit organization that seeks to reduce gender and racial achievement gaps, and to open minds and doors to higher education and careers in science and technology. The organization specifically targets populations that have historically been underrepresented in these fields. The majority of children served are also economically disadvantaged. Children gain confidence in and facility with science through free, hands-on activities led by scientists who inspire them to achieve. Using a near-peer mentoring model, 8-12th grade girls serve as junior assistants in K-7th grade after school clubs, working closely with volunteer scientists or science students. High school girls can choose to participate in media team or rocket team. All 8-12th graders participate in weekly leadership seminars and monthly chats with female scientists.
