Reggio emilia inspired Course Offering

This course will focus on the history and basic philosophy of the Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood education. We will consider organization of the environment, the teacher's role, the role of the atelerista, and the relationships between the schools and the community. Special focus on the emergent curriculum and processes for documentation. Participants taking the course are required to attend the Annual Reggio Emilia Institute on May 30 & 31, 2009. Those enrolling for 3 credits will participate online for the entire spring semester. Participants registered for 1 credit will attend the Institute and write an accompanying paper.

This course will focus on three crucial aspects of the Reggio Emilia Approach: the co-construction of knowledge through listening, observing, and supporting children's interactions in intentionally prepared environments; the use of pedagogical documentation as a tool for revisiting and interpreting experiences and for advancing learning and professional development; and the representation of ideas and hypotheses through many expressive languages as a way to communicate them to peers and adults.
