2009 Institute: Exploring Reggio-Inspired Programs in Diverse Communities

This unique learning opportunity focused on collaborations among Reggio–inspired programs, urban and suburban, public and private, in Tucson AZ and Chicago, IL. The Institute took place on May 30 & 31, 2009 was facilitated by Lella Gandini, Liaison for the Dissemination of the Reggio Emilia Approach in the United States.

2009 Institute Presenters were:

Karen M. Haigh is assistant professor of early childhood education at Columbia College Chicago while currently consults with the Chicago Public Schools and Head Start. She worked as the Director of Professional Development for the Chicago Public Schools Early Childhood Education Department and was former Child Development Director for Chicago Commons. She is also one of the authors of We Are All Explorers: Learning and Teaching with Reggio Principles in Urban Settings.

Kristin Brizzolara is a consulting educator and artist. She works closely with the inspiration of the Reggio approach in the Chicago schools, along with other public and private programs, to support teachers around materials, documentation, curriculum development and environment. Additionally, she has experience in exhibit and product design.

Teresa Acevedo is the Director of Children's Services for Head Start Child-Parent-Centers, Inc. Child-Parent-Centers serves over 2,000 children and families birth through five in five Southeastern Arizona counties. She is a Board member of the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA) and a principal planner of the Tucson Children’s Project. Terry has taught and worked in the field of Early Childhood for over 25 years.

Pauline M. Baker is a studio teacher and a collaborating teacher in Tucson Unified School District's early learning programs. She also serves as a consultant to Head Start, and other public and private early childhood programs in Arizona. She is a co-founder of the Tucson Children's Project, an action/advocacy initiative focusing on the study and inspiration of the Reggio Emilia approach.

Lella Gandini is the Liaison for the Dissemination of the Reggio Emilia Approach in the US, a prolific author, Scholar in Residence at Lesley University, and an inspiration to those studying the Reggio approach.

Joanne Szamreta is a professor of education and psychology at Lesley University and the Coordinator of the Institute.

Course Credit
