Biographies

Anthony Apesos teaches painting and drawing at The Art Institute of Boston and is acting director of the Institute's master of fine arts program in the visual arts. He studied painting at Bard College and The Pennsylvania Academy. He has had more than 20 one-person shows and has been in numerous group exhibitions. The subject of his paintings is usually the figure in landscape through which he tries to evoke a sense of timelessness but in a contemporary style. Susan Baker Cohen is Director of the Program Evaluation and Research Group (PERG), a nationally known evaluation and research group at Lesley University. Susan has been a PERG Senior Research Associate since 1987, and is currently PI of the Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach Evaluation. She was the Co-PI and Project Manager of the Massachusetts Statewide Systemic evaluation; PI of the Statewide Implementation Program and Project IMPACT evaluations, and Co-Lead Evaluator of the Metro-Nashville Area Local Systemic Change project evaluation, among others. A Professor in the Lesley University Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences, she has authored and co-authored numerous reports and other documents, and has presented at conferences and professional meetings on evaluation methods and research findings on topics related to science and mathematics education reform, evaluation methods, and student assessment in higher education. Dr. Julia Byers, director of expressive therapies, is a licensed mental health counselor, expressive art therapist and psycho human organization consultant, with experience in post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of military conflicts, particularly in the West Bank and Gaza. Her work focuses on the psychological effects of war and violence on children and their families. She is also involved with the research and development of expressive therapies with women who have breast cancer. Her recent publication co-editing Educators, Therapist, and Artists on Reflective Practice focuses on transformation learning from interdisciplinary perspectives integrating the artistry of the human condition. Nancy Carlsson-Paige is a co-founder of Lesley's masters degree program in conflict resolution and peaceable schools. For more than 20 years, she has been studying children's social development, the influence of media violence on children, and how children learn positive skills for getting along and resolving their conflicts. She has co-authored four books and many articles on topics relating to how children learn violent attitudes and behaviors and how they learn the skills of peacemaking and conflict resolution. Dr. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford, professor in counseling and psychology at Lesley, has worked as the coordinator of the community crisis response team at the Victims of Violence program, The Cambridge Health Alliance. Karen Estrella, expressive therapies professor, has worked with adults with psychiatric disabilities. Estrella has done art therapy, psychodrama, song writing and music therapy. Dr. Linda Grisham, associate professor and program director of the online Science in Education M.Ed. program, has a deep commitment to science and math teacher preparation, particularly for those who teach in underserved communities. Grisham has worked over the years as a research scientist (University of California, Santa Barbara and Brandeis University), science educator, curriculum developer, financial planner, community activist, and radio commentator. At Lesley, she has a joint appointment in the School of Undergraduate Studies, Natural Science Program and the School of Education, and she teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses in physics, chemistry, modeling complex systems, pharmacology, and science education. Projects include the co-creation/implementation of a fully online master's degree program, Science in Education Program for K-8 teachers with TERC, Inc., a science- and math-focused think tank. She is also a founding member of the Institute for African-American E-Culture, which focuses on how to create and assess culturally specific information technology within the African-American community. Dr. Jo-Anne Hart has been a full-time university professor for more than a decade, teaching and researching international politics in the Middle East, most of those at Brown University. She is a founding member of the Middle East Negotiation Project, at Search for Common Ground, in Washington, D.C. She has lectured widely around the U.S. and abroad, has been invited to speak at more than two dozen universities, and has given briefings for the U.S. State Department, Intelligence and the military, including Central Command, that responsible for the Persian Gulf at the time of the first war against Iraq in 1991. Hart was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations' year-long working group on the Persian Gulf. In addition to traditional academic appointments at Brown University, Columbia University and Barnard College, Hart taught at the U.S. Naval War College in the Strategy and Policy Department. Currently, Hart is a consultant for the U.S. Army regarding future security challenges in the Persian Gulf. Her numerous publications on Middle East politics and security appear in books and academic journals in the field. She continues to be an active participant in Middle East conflict resolution projects. She was in Iran a couple years ago as a guest lecturer with the Asia Society, when she traveled the country extensively, wearing a chador. Dr. Jared Kass, professor of counseling and psychology and director of the study project on well-being at Lesley, is also coordinator of the Boston Clergy ad Religious Leaders Group for Interfaith Dialogue. His work focuses on resiliency in the aftermath of life's traumas. Dr. Kass can also talk about the national psyche in regards to race, religious and cultural differences. Mary Kaye received a master of arts degree from Goddard College in sculpture. She has taught sculpture throughout California, New England and at The Art Institute of Boston, where she helped develop the curriculum of the Foundation program and the bachelor's degree in fine arts program. Mitchell Kossak, coordinator of the International Expressive Therapies program, specializes in music therapy. He has worked with elderly populations, autistic and mentally impaired children, and troubled youth. He has also worked with couples and family therapy. Dr. Vivien Marcow-Speiser, director of International Collaborative Projects in GSASS, is a dance therapist who has worked nationally and internationally on using the arts with trauma. Dr. Martha McKenna is acting provost and the former dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences. She is a professor in both the Creative Arts in Learning Program and the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, and has taught courses in aesthetics and art history. A corporator and lecturer of the Worcester Art Museum, Dr. McKenna has created lectures, museum guides, and a documentary For the Benefit of All. The goal of her work with the museum is to bring greater understanding and appreciation for its fine collection of 19th and 20th century art. McKenna earned her Ed.D. in Music, Arts, and Humanities from Columbia University. Her background includes studies at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Royal Academy of Music, and Harvard University. Access to public art through aesthetic encounters is the goal of her research and teaching. Her research has also focused on the integration of 20th century American visual and performing arts and women in the arts. Mary Mindess, a professor of education, specializes in early childhood education and child psychology. She has served as founder and coordinator of the New England Kindergarten Conference, the region's most prominent conference on early education, for 40 years. Mindess, recognized for her pioneer efforts in distance learning, developed some of the college's first online courses, which include Early Intervention, Cognitively Challenging Curriculum for Young Children, and Children with Behavior Problems: Responding to the Challenge. Mindess also served as the director of the Lesley University Center for Children, Families and Public Policy and is co-author of the 1994 book "Eliciting Children's Full Potential." David Morimoto, director, Natural Science and Mathematics, Lesley College, is an expert in conservation biology and animal behavior. He currently is working to establish a research program in Mata Atlantica (Atlantic forest), an endangered ecosystem in Parana, Brazil. He earned his doctorate in biology from Boston University, and spent 14 years teaching in Regis College's Biology Department. He spent three years serving as department chair. Morimoto, who also served as a workshop leader at the Children's Rainforest Workshops in Peru, has traveled extensively and studied natural history in Central and South America, the Canary Islands, South Africa and Australia. Joan Ryan received her master of fine arts degree from Boston University, studying with James Weeks and John Wilson. She has taught painting and drawing at The Art Institute of Boston since 1986 and was chairperson of the Fine Arts and Foundation Program from 1999 to 2003. Dr. Maureen Brown Yoder has been involved in educational technology for more than 20 years as a student, faculty member, and administrator in the Technology in Education Master's Degree program.
