Ribbon Cutting

On Monday, August 31, 2009, Lesley students, faculty, administrators and neighbors gathered to celebrate the opening of the two new residence halls at 1 and 3 Wendell Street. The buildings' first residents moved into their new homes over the weekend of September 6-7.

  • Wendell Street paving and paving of the parking lot behind 3 Wendell Street is scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2009. Wendell Street will be closed to traffic at that time. Police details will be present.

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Finish painting and touching; millwork and shelving in rooms; lighting, electrical and fire alarm finishes; mechanical equipment start up; doors and hardware; punchlist.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Finish painting and touching; millwork and shelving in rooms; lighting, electrical and fire alarm finishes; mechanical equipment start up; doors and hardware; finish paint on 1st floor; punchlist.

  • Please be advised that on Thursday, August 6, 2009, Aggregate Industries / A.A. Will will be onsite at 7:00am to perform the street grinding on Wendell St. The grinding will be done from the property line of the new dormitory on Wendell St. to Mass Ave., along with the parking lane on Mass Ave. The parking lane on Mass Ave. will be done first, then the equipment will move on to Wendell St. This work will take approximately 4-5 hours. Wendell Street will be closed at Oxford St. but will remain open to Wendell St. residents. A police detail will placed at Wendell and Oxford and Wendell and Mass Ave. Traffic on Oxford on to Wendell St. will be detoured down Garfield Street. Detour signs will be posted.

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Interior finishes (carpet, tile, millwork, doors and hardware) on floors 2, 3 , 4 and 5; bathroom plumbing and fixtures; ceiling grid at lobbies 2, 3, 4 and 5; taping/sanding/priming on floor 1; interior site work.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Finish painting, carpeting and millwork on floor 3; taping, sanding and priming pain on floor 1.

Week of July 13, 2009

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Ceramic tile installation on 2nd floor bathrooms; taping and sanding on 1st floor and main stair; mill-work and cabinets on 2nd and 3rd floors; priming/painting on 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th floors; carpeting on 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. Sidewalk replacement work will begin on July 7.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Exterior painting; drywall on 1st floor; taping on 1st and 2nd floors; painting on 2nd and 3rd floors; will-work on 3rd floor.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Exterior painting; drywall on 2nd and 3rd floors; interior building insulation. Sidewalk replacement along Wendell Street is anticipated to commence the week of June 29.

Week of June 8, 2009

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Interior wall framing and ceiling framing on 1st and 2nd floors; rough-in for fire alarm on 1st and 2nd floors; drywall on 2nd and 3rd floors; taping on 4th floor; floor prep on 4th floor; ceramic tile installation on 5th floor bathrooms; completion of siding on north elevation; curtain installation. Overhead protection on the Wendell Street sidewalk will be dismantled Tuesday (6/9) and Wednesday (6/10).

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Exterior siding & painting; drywall on 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors; interior building insulation.

Week of June 1, 2009

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Sidewalk replacement along Massachusetts Avenue is on-going; fire protection rough-in; interior wall framing and ceiling framing on 1st and 2nd floors; rough-in for building electrical, tel/data, plumbing, and HVAC systems on all floors; expansion joint work between buildings is on-going; drywall on 4th floor; prime and paint walls on 5th floor; floor prep on 5th floor; ceramic tile on 5th floor; taping on 5th floor; drywall on 3rd floor. Scaffolding on the north wing will be dismantled on Friday 5/29.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Construction of front porch area; siding is on-going; mechanical, electrical, plumbing and elevator construction is on-going; inspections for electrical and plumbing; building insulation; building inspection to start drywall; exterior painting.

Week of May 18, 2009

  • On Monday 5/18, a crane will be inside the construction area to hoist the curtain wall at the courtyard area. We are coordinating with the Cambridge Department of Public Works and Traffic & Parking Department to start sidewalk replacement along Massachusetts Avenue.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Installation of roof shingles and exterior trim.

  • We will be placing concrete at the south stair and retail stair. The pour is scheduled for 7:00am. A concrete pump will be set up on site along with one concrete truck. A police detail will be present.

Week of April 6, 2009

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Window installation at all elevations, exterior trim at the Mass Ave, Wendell Street and north elevations, roof installation at low roofs, MEP rough in of piping and duct work (inside the building), installation of pre-cast caps at parapets, fire protection rough in and interior wall framing at 5th floor. Elevator construction is ongoing.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Installation of roof, installation of nail base at mansard and window installation. Elevator construction is ongoing.

Week of March 30, 2009

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Elevator construction is ongoing, interior wall framing at 5th floor, miscellaneous areas of spray foam insulation, south stair installation from basement to 5th floor, MEP rough in of piping and duct work (inside the building), exterior brick work in the courtyard area, fire protection rough in at 1st floor, roof installation at the 4th and 5th floor roofs, window installation and exterior trim at the Mass Ave and Wendell Street elevations.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Installation of roof and interior wall framing.

Week of March 23, 2009

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Continue with the exterior wall framing, dense glass and waterproofing at window openings, spray foam insulation at building exterior, construction of roof parapets at low roofs (north and south wings), MEP rough in of piping and duct work (inside the building), exterior brick work in the courtyard area, fire protection rough in at basement and 1st floor, start installation of the roof, window installation and exterior trim.

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Interior wall construction and framing at the west side of building on the 3rd floor.

  • On Wednesday, March 11th, material trucks and a small truck crane will be on site for roofing materials delivery. A police detail will be on site to assist pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

  • At 1663 Massachusetts Avenue: Continue with the exterior wall framing and sheathing, waterproofing at window openings, spray foam insulation at building exterior, continue with construction of roof steel and metal decking, MEP rough in of piping and duct work (inside the building), exterior brick work at the south elevation and west elevation (1st floor), construct scaffolding at the north and south wing (inside the work area)

  • At 3 Wendell Street: Framing of the roof will be ongoing, start wall framing at the west side of building

Week of February 16, 2009

  • PRESIDENTS DAY, February 16, 2009: Construction site will be closed.
  • A crane will be installed Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. inside the construction area. The crane is anticipated to be on site through Friday. If dates shift, updates will be posted here and on the on-site information panel.
  • Framing of building structure on 3rd floor mansard will be ongoing at 3 Wendell Street.
  • Exterior wall framing and sheathing, waterproofing window openings, spray foam insulation at 1st and 2nd floors, structural steel roof framing, mechanical/electrical work on 1st and 2nd floors, and brickwork on south elevation at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.

  • Wood framing on 2nd floor walls at 3 Wendell Street.
  • Pre-cast plank construction is scheduled to begin on the 5th floor at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue on Wednesday, January 21st.
  • A crane will be installed Wednesday morning at 7:00 a.m. inside the construction area.
  • A police detail will be on site Wednesday-Friday to assist with pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

  • Building scaffolding on north elevation, exterior wall framing on 2nd and 3rd floors, and construction of masonry walls on 4th floor at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.

Week of January 5, 2009

  • Continuation of building scaffolding along Massachusetts Avenue and Wendell Street.
  • Exterior wall framing and construction of masonry walls and grout for floor plank on 4th floor at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.
  • On-going framing of the building structure at 3 Wendell Street.
  • A police detail will be on site for deliveries.

Saturday, December 20

  • Given the snowstorm forecast for Friday night, site cleanup and preparation will be required on Saturday. Start time for work will be 9:00am.

Week of December 22

  • Pre-cast plank construction and structural steel detailing on the fourth floor, wood framing on the first floor and masonry work on the elevator at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.
  • A crane will be installed inside the construction area on Monday morning at 7:00am.
  • Wood framing on the first floor and masonry work on the elevator at 3 Wendell Street.
  • CHRISTMAS DAY, December 25, 2008: Construction site will be closed.
  • ST STEPHEN'S DAY, December 26, 2008: Construction site will be open.

Saturday, December 13

  • Due to this week's inclement weather, block work on the third floor of 1663 Massachusetts Avenue will continue on Saturday, beginning at 9:00am.

Week of December 15

  • Installation of block, layout for interior and exterior partitions and mechanical systems at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.
  • Placing slab on grade at 3 Wendell Street.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of December 8

  • Building scaffolding, plank grout and masonry construction on the on the third floor of 1663 Massachusetts Avenue will be on-going.
  • Installation of the spray vapor barrier and slab on grad at 3 Wendell Street will be on-going.

Saturday, December 6

  • Beginning at 9:00am, a tent will be set up to cover the foundation at 3 Wendell Street for work on the vapor barrier and concrete work. The tent will be on site for approximately one week.

Week of November 24

  • Masonry walls at the second floor at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue will be on-going.
  • Building scaffolding will continue to be constructed.
  • THANKSGIVING, Thursday, November 27, 2008: Job site will be closed.

Week of November 17

  • Work inside the site installing underground plumbing, under-slab ventilation and prep work for below-slab vapor barrier at 3 Wendell Street.
  • Edge forms at second floor planks for grout, steel detailing, perimeter safety, and gas piping for winter heat at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.
  • Scaffolding for sidewalk protection at Wendell Street.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of November 10

  • Backfilling of foundation walls and underground plumbing and electrical work at 3 Wendell Street.
  • VETERANS DAY, Tuesday, November 11, 2008: Job site will be closed.
  • Pre-cast plank construction at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue. A crane will be in operation inside the construction area.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of November 3

  • Excavation and installation of conduit to Verizon manhole on Massachusetts Avenue.
  • Form-work, concrete placement of foundation and backfilling of foundation walls at 3 Wendell Street.
  • Masonry and structural steel detailing ongoing at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of October 27

  • Masonry work and detailing of the structural steel at 1663 Massachusetts Avenue will be on-going.
  • Excavation at 3 Wendell Street will be ongoing. Excavated material will be hauled off site. Concrete form-work and concrete placement for the building's foundation will also be in progress.
  • Rebar delivery is scheduled for Monday. Concrete deliveries are scheduled for Tuesday-Friday.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of October 20

  • Structural steel construction at 1663 Massachusetts Ave is scheduled to begin this week. Pre-cast plank construction is scheduled to begin on the building's ground floor.
  • Excavation at 3 Wendell Street will be ongoing. Excavated material will be hauled off site. Concrete form-work and concrete placement for the building's foundation will also be in progress.
  • A crane will be mobilizing on the site, inside the work area.
  • Steel deliveries are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. Plank deliveries are scheduled for Tuesday and Friday.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of October 6

  • Work will comprise mainly of backfilling at footings, excavating for underground plumbing and electrical systems, and compacting at the grade beam area.
  • Prep work and fine grading for basement slab pour.
  • Basement slab pour is targeted for mid-week.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of September 22

  • Paving on Wendell Street at location of sanitary line.
  • Work inside site excavating for footings, form-work and rebar installation, grade beams and elevator pit.
  • Backfilling of perimeter footings.
  • Foundation waterproofing and underground electrical work.
  • Deliveries will be 5-6 concrete trucks and 1 pump truck per day for placement of concrete at footings. Concrete pours will typically take place in the afternoon. Other deliveries will consist of small trucks with tools and supplies.
  • A police detail will be on site.

Week of September 15

  • Installation of the new sanitary line and connection on Wendell Street. There will be no interruption to service during this installation. A police detail will be on site.
  • Continuation of form-work, rebar installation and concrete for footings, walls and elevator pit on 1663 Mass Ave site. Placement of concrete for footings and walls and backfilling of perimeter footings will be ongoing.
  • Deliveries will be 5-6 concrete trucks per day for placement of concrete at footings and walls. Concrete pours will typically take place in the afternoon. Other deliveries will consist of small trucks with tools and supplies.

Week of September 8

  • Water, sewer line and fire protection service installation to 3 Wendell Street site. There will be no interruption to water service during this installation. A police detail will be on site.
  • Form-work, rebar installation and concrete for footings and walls on 1663 Mass Ave site.
  • Deliveries will be 3-4 concrete trucks per day for placement of concrete at footings and walls. Concrete pours will typically take place in the afternoon. Other deliveries will consist of small trucks with tools and supplies.

Week of August 25

  • Excavation of the basement continues throughout the week, with the goal of completing excavation by week's end.
  • Utility work -- connections of water and sewer systems into the site -- begins. Due to the nature of this work and its impact on sidewalks, there may some disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. There will be a police detail on site.
Week of August 18
  • On Monday, with drilling and installation of “H” piles complete, drill rig and other related equipment will be moved off site.
  • Excavation of the building footprint to create the basement area will begin, including the installation of a wooden support system.
  • This excavation will continue over the next two weeks, with a target of completion by Labor Day
Week of August 11
  • Continue with drilling and installation of 'H' piles required for excavation support along Wendell Street and Massachusetts Avenue section of the site.
  • Trucking will consist of miscellaneous deliveries of small equipment and tools, and two or three concrete trucks to fill the 'H' piles.
  • The construction fence will be moved approximately two feet into the sidewalk in order to make room for this excavation to ensure pedestrian safety.
  • Dust control will be used as needed.

Week of August 4

  • Removal of slab and foundation of the former Alamo / National car rental building.
  • Removal of asphalt from site.
  • Excavation of pre-trench test pits along Mass Ave and Wendell St perimeters of site.
  • All work will be within the construction area.
  • Trucking will be limited to 2-3 trucks per day to remove excess material from the site
  • Dust control will be used as needed.

Week of July 28

  • Demolition of the former Alamo / National car rental building is expected to be completed this week.
  • Set-up and preparations for the lateral earth support for basement excavation.

Week of July 21

  • Utility disconnections for the former Alamo / National car rental building are complete.
  • A trailer will be positioned on the site as a temporary office space for the construction team.

Week of July 14

  • Work continues on preparing for the demolition of the former Alamo / National car rental building, including disconnecting utilities.
  • Actual demolition is now anticipated to occur during the week of July 21.

Weeks of June 30 & July 7

  • Activity for the week of June 30 will be limited to continued preparation for the demolition of the former Alamo / National car rental building.
  • We anticipate demolition to occur during the week after the 4th of July Holiday.

Week of June 23

  • A new construction fence will be erected around the perimeter of the site for safety and security.
  • Preparation work for the demolition of the former Alamo / National car rental building will include interior work and the removal of air conditioning systems.
  • We anticipate the structure will be removed following the 4th of July Holiday.
  • We expect no disruption to traffic and sidewalks.

Week of June 16:

  • A construction fence will be erected around the area of the former Bank of America ATM kiosk for safety and security.
  • The former Bank of America ATM kiosk will be demolished. Demolition work is expected to take approximately 2-3 days.
  • We expect no disruption to traffic or sidewalks.
