Lesley University Graduate Assistant Program
2012-2013 Student Application Available April 25 2012
DESCRIPTION: The Lesley University Graduate Assistant Program reflects the commitment of the University to provide equal educational opportunities to those historically underserved by higher education and to respond to the needs of society and the student. The Graduate Assistant Program offers students the opportunity to work closely with faculty/administrators in research, teaching, or scholarship support activities. In addition to developing skills related to their professional goals, students benefit from working with faculty/administrators who serve in dual roles as supervisors and mentors. All graduate and doctoral students who have been accepted for admissions for on-campus programs are eligible to apply. Since serving historically underserved students is one of the primary goals of the program, ALANA (African-American, Latino, Asian American, and Native American) students particularly are encouraged to apply. Graduate Assistants are contracted on an academic year basis (October through May). Two positions are reserved for international students.
PROCESS: Graduate and doctoral students who have been accepted for admission to an on-campus program are eligible to submit an application. Application forms will be available on this page, April 25, 2012. The application will provide more detailed instructions on the application process. The application deadline for students is June 1, 2012. Students will be notified of the committee's decision by June 29, 2012. When selected students return to campus, they will arrange an interview with the mentor with whom they have been matched. Mentors will make the final selection based on the fit between student and mentor interests/skills. Selected students will be entered into the payroll system through the Provost's office. Students should bring the requisite documentation and the signed employment agreement with them.
TYPES OF POSITIONS: Students are placed in a variety of research assistant positions. Positions will be posted by April 25, 2012. All positions have both professional training and a mentoring component.
AWARDS AND PAYMENT SCHEDULE: Successful candidates are awarded $3400 per academic year issued in eight monthly allotments (October-May) at $425. Paychecks are mailed directly to the students' home address. All assignments require the equivalent of ten hours of work per week during the academic year (approximately 130 hours per semester).
