Religious Observance

Under Massachusetts law, employers must make reasonable accommodations to meet the religious needs of their employees. Thus, employees with sincerely held religious beliefs--without regard to whether those beliefs are attributable to any organized religion or church--may request reasonable accommodations, including time away from work, to participate in religious services or other required religious practices. Employees must submit their requests for accommodations to their supervisors at least ten (10) days before an accommodation would need to be made. Accommodations for religious reasons will be approved unless the request causes an undue burden on the University.

If the accommodation is time away from work, it may be taken in one of the following three ways:

  1. unpaid;
  2. paid if the employee has accrued vacation time and uses it for this purpose;
  3. or the time away from work may be made up at a time which has been mutually agreed to between the supervisor and employee.
