Lesley University | Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Coming in 2009! Evelyn M. Finnegan Writing for Young People Scholarships

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing Program is offered in a low-residency format that allows students, with the oversight of a faculty-mentor, to design their own programs of study concentrating in one of five genres:

  • Fiction
  • Nonfiction
  • Poetry
  • Stage and Screenwriting
  • Writing for Young People

Low-Residency MFA Creative Writing program highlights

  •  Named one of "the more distinguished low-residency programs" in The Creative Writing MFA Handbook
  •  Residencies in Cambridge, Massachusetts: a literary center
  •  An interdisciplinary component that nourishes student writing
  •  Graduate Assistantships and a Literary Ventures Fund (LVF) scholarship available
  •  Publishing modules and internships with Post Road and LVF
  •  Two-year Post-Graduate Senior Fellowship in Teaching available

A unique, interdisciplinary approach that benefits all writers

Lesley's MFA Creative Writing program helps students expand their abilities as writers by widening the angles, and deepening the fields, of their vision. Opportunities for interdisciplinary learning are made possible through all the schools at Lesley University including The Art Institute of Boston at Lesley (AIB), and in key disciplines including:

  • Art therapy
  • Psychology
  • Education
  • Expressive Therapies

Enhancing learning opportunities for program participants

In keeping with the program's emphasis on producing active professional writers, Lesley has developed key partnerships:

  • Post Road, a literary magazine
  • The Literary Ventures Fund,  whose founder is an alum of Lesley's Creative Writing program
