MASTER OF EDUCATION IN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION - SPECIALIZATION IN LITERACY: LANGUAGE, READING AND WRITING WITH THE OPTION TO PURSUE OREGON CONTINUING TEACHER LICENSEThis program is offered in:
The Curriculum and Instruction with Specialization in Literacy: Language, Reading and Writing program trains experienced elementary, middle and high school teachers to be aware of a range of issues and ideas about literacy, and to use a variety of methods and strategies that are central to teaching students to read, write, speak and listen across the grades. The program assists candidates to: 1) deepen their professional capacity, skills and performance beyond the Initial Licensure level to the level of a career educator; 2) broaden their professional capacity, skills and performance by adding new endorsements; 3) enhance the individual capacity of teachers and serve as a flexible vehicle for advanced training for educators who wish to apply technology to many areas of learning and community service. The Literacy specialization courses provide educators with a foundation in current theoretical models related to literacy learning and its application across diverse populations of students. Participants in the program will also enhance their knowledge and skills in the area of curriculum development for the language arts as well as how to connect the language arts and other disciplines. The program consists of ten three-credit courses offered in a specific sequence, with three one-credit advanced professional practice seminars interspersed throughout the program to help students demonstrate evidence of their advanced teaching proficiency. Students who are not seeking Continuing Teacher License (CTL) do not complete the seminars, and will complete a three-credit elective at the end of the program if they do not transfer in appropriate coursework. All students must complete 33 credit hours. A Master of Education degree is awarded upon completion of 33 credit hours, and the Oregon Continuing Teacher License can be earned by successfully completing 3 required, advanced professional practice seminars of 1 each. Please Note: * The target start dates listed are estimated. The actual start date will be determined when 18 students have applied to the program. The actual program start date may occur earlier or later than the target start date listed based on the number and pace of applications accepted.
