  • AUTHOR LESLEA NEWMAN TO DISCUSS HER CONTROVERSIAL CHILDREN'S BOOK

In honor of Women's History Month, Leslea Newman, a powerful author, poet, fiction writer and editor, will come to campus on Tuesday, March 11 to speak out about homophobia, censorship and family values, and discuss her children's book, "Heather Has Two Mommies." The book was the second most banned book in the country in 1994. It became headline news with the New York Times, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report.

"Heather Has Two Mommies" was chosen to be part of the 1992 New York Rainbow Curriculum, a course of study designed to promote tolerance and appreciation of diversity. The book was one of three in the curriculum dealing with gay families. A campaign was started in Queens to have the book taken out the curriculum because it enforced teaching homosexuality.

The controversy around the book caused it to be sold out of its first 4,000 copies in print and went back to press.

Newman's talk at Lesley will begin at 7 p.m. in Welch Auditorium. A reception and book signing will follow.
