




FACULTY/STAFF NOTESJudith Beth Cohen, associate professor, School of Undergraduate Studies, led a panel, "Building a Curriculum from the Stories of Adult Students," in November at the National Council of Teachers of English Convention, held in Chicago. Participants also included Assistant Professor Barbara Vacarr and adjunct faculty member Deborah Piper, of the School of Undergraduate Studies, and Mary Clare Powell, associate professor, Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences.
Cohen had several articles printed recently. "Laughing in the Classroom: How Humor Enhances Education," appeared in the October issue of "English Leadership Quarterly." "Humor in the Novels of Francine Prose and Bette Pesetsky," was published in the Winter 1996 issue of "California English." Cohen is listed in the twentieth edition (1997) of "Who's Who of American Women."
Barbara Govendo, assistant professor, School of Education, presented a session, "Collaboration for Student and Teacher Success," in October at the International Conference of the Council for Learning Disabilities, held in Nashville.
Susan Gurry, associate professor, and Anne Larkin, professor, both in the School of Education, presented "Inclusion in the Middle Schools: The Right Match," in November at the twentieth Annual National TASH Conference held in New Orleans. The Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps (TASH) is an international organization which acts on behalf of children and adults with significant disabling conditions.
Sam Turner, special assistant to the president for affirmative action, was a workshop presenter at the 1996 "Recruiting New Teachers" conference, this fall in Atlanta. He was also recently elected President of AAAP (Association of Affirmative Action Professionals), a 750 member organization in New England.
