Education Minor

The Education minor provides students with the opportunity to explore the field of education by combining coursework with field experiences in a variety of educational settings such as schools, museums and child advocacy agencies.

The Education minor is especially attractive to students who:

are not sure if they want to be classroom teachers
are interested in teaching outside the classroom in settings such as museums, after-school programs or tutoring organizations
are interested in pursuing careers which support and enhance teaching and learning such as educational publishing, consulting, advocacy, curriculum development, professional development and children’s television.
are interested in seeking licensure at the graduate level, but want the field of education to be an integral part of their undergraduate program.

CEDUC 1352 Teaching, Learning and Social Responsibility

This course introduces students to the role of the school in a multicultural society and helps each student develop a professional identity. Attention is given to school climate and the role of the school in supporting the intellectual and social development of its students, with particular emphasis on socially responsible behavior. Through a variety of means including readings, site visits, case studies, video tapes, and presentations by professional educators, students are introduced to five areas of education: early childhood, elementary, special education, middle school, and secondary classrooms. Issues related to the integration and inclusion of students with special needs in regular education environments are addressed. Students also expand and develop their critical thinking skills. Field visits/experiences are incorporated into the course throughout the semester. 4 credits

CEDUC 3721 Field Experiences in Learning Environments

This field experience is designed to provide students with an opportunity for additional study in a clinical setting. Under the direction of the field supervisor, students work twelve hours per week in a school, child care program or other educational setting. Students may choose a placement that is related to their certificate specialization, or liberal arts major. Students work under the guidance of an appropriate faculty member, or if enrollment is sufficient, participate in weekly seminars.
