The Animation Minor is designed to provide students a solid foundation in the conceptual and technical aspects of animation and motion media art.
The 15-credit Animation minor introduces undergraduate students to the techniques, tools and theory utilized in professional animation, from concept creation to final cut. Students receive the opportunity to visualize their creativity through a variety of animation processes, including stop-motion, 3D animation, and traditional figure drawing.
Following completion of two required courses that teach core animation principles and provide an introduction to computer animation, students can pursue nine credits that provide exposure to animation through a variety of media channels. Elective course offerings include developing animation concepts for video games and commercials.
The Animation Minor also includes elective course offerings in video production. Students have the opportunity to craft their own production projects both in the field and in the studio, with courses dedicated to digital video shooting and sound design.
Students gain direct experience with Procreate Painter and Adobe After Effects, as well as Adobe Premiere and Avid Elastic Reality. Together, these programs offer a powerful set of tools to facilitate the creation of a variety of 2D animation, based in digital filmmaking and hand-drawn techniques.
This advanced course develops story ideas around the personalities of characters. Lessons in this course offering focus on character designs, model sheets, layouts, and descriptions of how the character behaves in different scenarios. Storyboards are developed from these primary components. "Star" characters from the history of animation serve as inspiration, and a broad range of approaches are discussed.
