Each Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visual Arts student chooses an Artist Mentor whose work or point of view is of particular interest to the student, or who has a special expertise which is of use to the student's work.
During the semester, students are engaged in their creative work in their studios which is over-seen by their Artist Mentor and Faculty Advisor. The student chooses an Artist Mentor whose work or point of view is of particular interest to the student, or who has a special expertise useful for the further development of the student's work. Preferably, the Artist Mentor lives near the student so that periodic critiques and conversations can occur, but other modes of communications, such as the Internet, are possible and may be used if needed. It is each student's responsibility to either choose a Mentor from the program's existing list or to choose and contact a new Artist Mentor who must then be approved by the program.
During the semester, you are expected to meet with your Artist Mentor on a regular basis and devote a minimum of 25 hours per week to your artistic endeavors. While the MFA in Visual Arts is a low-residency program, we consider you a full-time student in the program. The intention of the program is to foster students' ability to work independently with discipline and focus both while enrolled in the MFA program and, especially, after graduation. Students learn to integrate their artistic passion and goals within their lives.
