Students from the MFA in Visual Arts program establish themselves within the College of Art and Design community. Present and Accounted For spotlights their unique process and perspective.
The inaugural unveiling of Present and Accounted For was shown during the June MFA in Visual Arts residency on the outside of the newly constructed Lunder Arts Center, for just one night. The project sought to show the at-home studio process of Group 3 low residency MFA students in short 30 second video clips. It is the first time video was projected on the external walls of the Lunder Arts Center at 1815 Massachusetts Avenue. The project was organized by Chris Francis and Stacey Silkey Schultze, edited with assistance from Jordan Thomas, and included participating Group 3 students.
Organizing the Present and Accounted For exhibition gave students the opportunity to learn collaboratively and sharpen pragmatic project skills. Although, the true success lies in the audience's positive response to the exhibition. Present and Accounted For established the presence of low-residency students on campus, while acknowledging the value they add to the greater College of Art and Design community, as well as our neighbors in Cambridge. This exhibition created meaningful dialogue between students, faculty, administration, and the greater Cambridge area. Community engagement is a sign of a healthy environment.
"Present and Accounted For allowed us to showcase the unique studio practices of our small, but wildly diverse MFA (in Visual Arts) group. Multiplied, it paints a picture of the low-residency program, which attracts people of all demographics working independently within their own unique settings." - Christina Hunt Wood, MFA in Visual Arts
Group 3 hopes to see this project continue into the future, with other viewings during the undergraduate semesters as a way to better connect the MFA program on campus, to enable a wider conversation between classes, as well as grow in participation next January with all of the MFA in Visual Art classes being Present and Accounted For.
