Prepare to become both effective and proactive in meeting the needs of English Language Learners, capitalizing on the power of the arts. Initial Licensure Program - Massachusetts Only
English Language Learners are the fastest-growing school-age population in schools today. In taking this M.Ed. in ESL Arts, you will participate in a unique, innovative, and comprehensive teacher education program that addresses the needs of ELLs by combining the most current English as a Second Language (ESL) and arts research. The program is based on the philosophy that being proficient in two or
more languages is an important priority in the global community. The arts provide students multiple entry points for access to content and a powerful resource for inquiry, self-expression, and agency.
This course introduces participants to teaching through the arts as it sets the foundation for effective pedagogy for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Legal issues and historical perspectives are used to examine students' rights and ways that prejudice, culture, language diversity, and socioeconomic factors influence academic success. Through art-based work, students examine their own cultural and linguistic backgrounds, develop culturally responsive arts curriculum, and identify and utilize diverse cultural and arts resources in the community.
