Examine your teaching—in your own K-8 classroom—in this clinically-based online program with a focus on elementary science.
If you are a current K–8 teacher who would like to become a better teacher, and your focus is science, this unique online Master's program offers continuous coaching of instructional practices. This is accomplished by using video technology that captures both teacher and student work in your classroom. Science content courses—in engineering, physical science, life science, earth and space science, and the physics of mechanics—provide deeper subject matter knowledge and understanding. These are complemented by clinical courses that emphasize three highly interactive practices: assessment, culture and climate of the classroom, and teaching for learning progressions.
In this introductory course on science inquiry participants investigate common everyday phenomena. This course invites participants to “uncover” the complexity of a simple glass of water. They observe physical processes at play in this familiar system and develop scientific "habits of mind." Participants see how scientific principles can be applied to understanding the world around us. The following key physical science concepts are explored: density, displacement, buoyancy, melting, freezing, equilibrium, phase changes and energy transfers.
