Integrating the Arts into the School Day

Enhance and enliven your teaching as you learn to develop effective teaching strategies to address the needs of all learners by integrating arts into the curriculum. This approach to teaching allows students to construct and demonstrate their understanding of academic content through various art forms. Examine the theory and practice of arts integration, critical pedagogy, the role of the arts in community, and various arts disciplines such as visual arts, music, poetry, drama, and creative movement.

With the practical, relevant nature of the coursework, you can use your classrooms as a laboratory to test, implement and evaluate the lessons learned in class.

      SAMPLE PROGRAM COURSE

       EARTS 5351  Cultural History Through Storytelling
       
      Students explore stories and story types from various oral and written traditions. Drawing on culture and family, students develop original stories while integrating other art forms. Finally, students explore curriculum uses for storytelling in order to bring subject matter to life and motivate student learning.

      VOICES FROM THE FIELD

      The Creative Arts in Learning Division conducted a study to research the effectiveness of arts in education. The study, funded by the Ford Foundation and entitled Voices From the Field, was designed to explore the impact of the Integrated Teaching Through the Arts Master's program, which has produced more than 10,000 graduates and is offered in 23 states.

      Graduates report that using the arts can provide multiple and stimulating points of access to curriculum and increase retention and depth of student learning. Approximately 90 percent also said the arts enhanced learning for special needs, gifted and talented, economically disadvantaged, and culturally/linguistically diverse students.
