Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan?

Document Delivery refers to borrowing materials within the FLO consortium. Materials listed in the FLO Catalog will indicate the owning library.

The purpose of Interlibrary Loan is to obtain materials NOT owned by the Lesley University Libraries or FLO, for use by current faculty, staff and students. Interlibrary Loan refers to borrowing materials from libraries and institutions in the United States.

Who can use Document Delivery and Interlibrary Loan?

Current students, faculty and staff of Lesley University can use these services. Alumni and special borrowers must use Interlibrary Loan services at their local public libraries.

What if I am an off-campus student?

Please consult the Off-Campus Handbook

Under what circumstances can I request an item owned by Lesley University Libraries?

If an item is "Available," but not on the shelf, you may fill out a MISSING ITEM SEARCH FORM at the main Circulation Desk. Staff will search for the item and if you have so requested, forward the request to another library if Lesley’s copy is unavailable.

If the Lesley item is "Charged," but is available at another FLO library, it can be requested from the other library. If the Lesley item is "Charged," but is not available at another FLO library, a "Hold" can be placed on it.

If the Lesley item is "Missing" or "Lost" it can be requested through Document Delivery or Interlibrary Loan.

Titles in Reference or on Reserve at the Lesley University Libraries can be requested through document delivery. However, they cannot be requested from libraries outside the FLO consortium via Interlibrary Loan.

How can I request materials? ON CAMPUS / OFF CAMPUS

ON CAMPUS:
Current students, faculty, and staff with a Lesley ID and ability to pick up materials at Ludcke Library or AIB Library when required.

Articles (copies for you to keep):
1. First check the FLO Catalog and the Journals List to make sure we do not own the journal. If we own the material in print, please come into the library to make copies.
2. If we do not own the material, please fill out the Article Request Form
3. When the material comes to the library we will mail or email it (if possible) to the address that you provided in the request form.

Materials that need to be returned to library (e.g. books):
1. First check the FLO Catalog to make sure we do not own the material. If we do own the material then please come into the library to retrieve it from the shelves.
2. If the library you are requesting from (i.e. Ludcke or AIB) does not own the material but it is available in the FLO consortium, please request it through "My Account."
3. If the material is not available from the Lesley University Libraries or the FLO consortium, please fill out the Book Request Form.
4. When we have received the material you requested you will be emailed or called (if no email was provided to us) so that you can then come into the library to pick up the material

OFF CAMPUS / OFF-SITE:

2. If the journal is not available full text, please fill out the Article Request Form
3. When the material comes in to the library we will mail or email (if possible) to the address that you provided in the request form.

Materials need to be returned to library (e.g. books):
Please refer to the Off-campus Handbook for details.

What materials can be borrowed?

Books, articles, dissertations, and book chapters can be borrowed if available. Certain materials are more difficult to borrow because many libraries do not lend audiovisual materials, rare books, reference books, or textbooks. If you would like to attempt to obtain these materials, please request early in your research process to allow more time.

How long will it take to get the materials?

Document Delivery - Materials are requested and if available are usually received within 5 business days.

Interlibrary Loan - The amount of time varies widely, from 3 days to a month or more. Each ILL request is sent to a string of up to 5 lending institutions. Each institution has up to 4 business days to respond (weekends and holidays excluded) to the request. A request could therefore take up to 31 calendar days to move through an entire string.

How will I receive and return the materials?

Copies (usually articles and chapters) will be mailed or emailed to the address you indicate on the request form. Copies are yours to keep.
Materials other than copies must be picked up at Ludcke or AIB Library. We will contact you when the requested material arrives. Items must be picked up and returned to the Library Circulation Desk by the due date.

Some rare books, research materials and all microfilm/fiche must be used in the library. Sometimes, it is permissible to make copies of the material to keep. You will be contacted when the material arrives in the library.

Can I renew the material?

Document Delivery — Renewals vary depending on the policy of each FLO library. To request a renewal call the Ludcke Circulation Desk 617-349-8850 or email docdel@lesley.edu. For the AIB Circulation Desk call 617-585-6670 or email aibcirc@lesley.edu . Overdue fees will accrue on Document Delivery Material and are set by the owning library.

Interlibrary Loan - RENEWALS MUST BE REQUESTED BEFORE THE DUE DATE. Renewals vary depending on the policy of each lending library. In order to renew an item, please call the Interlibrary Loan Office 617-349-8838 or email libcirc@lesley.edu a few days before the due date. Some libraries renew for a short period of time and some will not allow renewals. Be prepared to return the item right away if a renewal is not granted. Overdue fees will accrue on Interlibrary Loan Materials, $0.10 per day/book.

How many materials can I request?

Students may request 5 books and 5 articles per week. In total, students may request up to 15 articles per semester.
Faculty and PhD students may request more items if necessary for their research.

If you are submitting more than 5 requests at one time, please number them in order of priority.

What should I know about Copyright?

Lesley University Libraries follows the CONTU guidelines, which is the part of the Copyright Law of the United States, that deals with "fair use" by libraries. Interlibrary Loan is allowed to receive five articles from any one journal title in any one year. When more than 5 articles are requested from one title, the library must pay a copyright fee for each additional article.
