FACULTY RESERVES

LESLEY UNIVERISTY LIBRARIES RESERVE PROCEDURES

Materials from the Libraries’ main collections (including books, juvenile books, journals and journal articles) are handled through the Main Circulation Desks at Ludcke or AIB. Videos and other media are handled at the Kresge Center for Teaching Resources, located on the second floor of the library at Ludcke or at the Main Circulation Desk at AIB.

For an overview of Main Desks Reserves policies and procedures, please see Lesley University Libraries Reserve Procedures at the Main Circulation Desks (pdf). It will tell you what materials can and cannot be placed on Reserve and will answer commonly asked questions about copyright.

Placing materials on Reserve

Depending on your needs, please fill out either an Article Chapter Form, or a Book Form (or both). These can be downloaded in pdf or Microsoft Word format below, picked up at the Main Circulation Desks, or sent upon request via email. These requests can be sent to Emily Davis, edavis8@lesley.edu, for Ludcke requests or Raye Yankauskas, ryankaus@lesley.edu, for AIB requests.

For material such as a chapter from a book or a journal article, please use the Article Chapter Form (pdf) / (word). When filling out the form, please provide a complete citation for each of the titles to be placed on Reserve. This information is necessary so that titles can be processed individually and/or copyright permission obtained. Copies of the articles or chapters must also be provided.

For Lesley Library books and personally owned copies, please use the Book Form (pdf) / (word). Please make sure to fill out the form in its entirety. The information asked is necessary in order to process the reserve material.

If the materials have already been on Reserve during a previous semester, faculty are requested to come to the Libraries Main Circulation Desks to review their reserve requests with the Head of Access Services or the Circulation Reserves Supervisor. This will ensure that copyright permission can be obtained as quickly as possible.

Both Article/Chapter and Book Reserve request forms can be submitted in person at the Main Circulation Desks or by mail. Library staff will process Reserve requests in the order in which they are received. At peak periods please allow one week for processing.

Types of materials and how they will be handled

  • Books or unpublished material

Books or unpublished material will be put on Reserve as quickly as possible. These may be library owned or personal copies. If the Libraries do not own the book, the faculty person will be asked to provide one, or the Library will purchase one. This does not apply to textbooks, however, since the Libraries’ collection development policy does not permit the purchase of textbooks.

  • Copies of journal or newspaper articles

If the Libraries subscribe to the journal or newspaper in paper format, students will be referred to the library copy, available in paper, on microform, or full-text on line. For the convenience of faculty, journal titles held by the Libraries may be searched through the FLO catalog or through the Journals List located on the Libraries’ homepage.

If the Libraries do not subscribe to the requested journal and it is listed with the Copyright Clearance Center, the Head of Access Services will process the copyright request. This is done on line and the material will be processed as quickly as possible. If the copyright cost exceeds $25.00 per article, payment will be requested from the faculty member's department.

If the journal is not listed with CCC, the Head of Access Services will refer the request back to the faculty person and assist with an address and a sample permission letter. The material will not be processed for Reserve until written copyright permission is obtained.

Materials submitted with written copyright permission to accompany them will be processed as quickly as possible.

  • Video Tapes and other Media Materials

Media materials (audio, video, slides, etc.) from the Libraries’ collections or from faculty members' personal collections may be placed on reserve in the Kresge Center or the Circulation desk at AIB. All media materials that are placed on reserve are reviewed for the appropriate display, retention, or duplication permissions.
