Web Search Tools
Here are a few of the many (!) search tools available for searching the World Wide Web. They are all different, with unique search features and strategies. No single search engine searches everything on the web. We advise you to choose one, read the help screens, and follow their advice. Once you are comfortable with one search tool, you may want to try another.

Google

Google offers a simple search screen that gives surprisingly accurate results.
Just list terms in priority order in the search box. Google prioritizes
results in relevancy order, according to how close together your search
terms appear in the web page. It also groups pages under their host sites,
where relevant.

Alta Vista

Alta Vista is a vast database of over 21 million World Wide Web sites and
Usenet news groups. The search engine allows detailed customizing of search
strategies and results through the Advanced search page.

Excite

Excite lets you search more than 50 million Web pages, 140,000 Web site
listings, and thousands of Usenet postings. The Power Search feature offers
a search form with drop down menus that allows you to customize your search
strategy and results.

Ingenta (formerly UnCover)

Ingenta, formerly called UnCover, is a document delivery and table of contents
service with over 17,000 periodicals in all fields. Anyone may browse the
database for citations. People who enter a user profile may order fax copies
of articles, charged to a credit card.

Lycos

Lycos is a large database of 10 million World Wide Web Sites. The search
engine allows users to customize searching with drop-down menus or to browse
subject headings.

Search.Com

Search.Com is a site that points to many popular search engines. "Express
Search" facilitates quick searching through several search engines.

Yahoo

Yahoo is a major directory of WWW resources. Updated daily, this directory
is organized by a hierarchy of subject headings. Topics may be narrowed
by browsing or may be searched by keyword at any time. Searches work best
when simple, such as proper names or common short phrases: Erik Erikson,
women writers, or Boston Red Sox.
