Sherrill Library

Sherrill Library, built in 1965 and named for Henry Knox Sherrill, the twentieth presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church is a joint Library for the Episcopal Divinity School and Lesley University. The Library is a member of the Fenway Library Consortium (FLC), a cooperating group of 14 libraries which allow students and faculty access to one another's collections. We also participate in Fenway Libraries Online (FLO), a subgroup of the Fenway Library Consortium which allows library users to check a union catalog of the holdings of 9 of these libraries.

Sherrill Library houses over 120,000 print titles and many print journal subscriptions in addition to a growing list of electronic resources. The various collections in the Library are strong in all curricular areas, with an emphasis on religion, biblical studies, Episcopal Church history, education, psychology, human services, management, environmental studies and expressive arts therapies.

The main library book collection is complemented by a Reference Collection which includes general and specialized reference sources in religion, education, psychology, social sciences, management, and the liberal arts. Standard sources, including encyclopedias, handbooks, indexes, almanacs, dictionaries, and directories, provide a core collection of basic reference materials. This collection remains in the library and is available for use on the premises by all users who visit the main campus. These physical materials supplement our electronic reference resources.

The Periodicals Collection includes all current subscriptions to journals and periodicals as well as bound back issues of many titles. Most extensive journal coverage exists in biblical studies, religion, education, psychology, and expressive arts therapies. Moderate coverage exists in the areas of human services, management, social sciences, and computers. Liberal arts, physical sciences, and general interest periodicals are covered selectively. The Library also subscribes to online databases which index articles in journals and periodicals. Full text articles are available in these databases and are accessible by authorized users from each school through their respective network portals. Print periodicals are available to all visitors who come into the Library.

The New and Noteworthy Collection includes books and other materials temporarily on display in the Atrium and represents a cross section of titles from the Library’s new acquisitions. On the Lower Level of the Library building, the Teaching Resources Collection houses the a unique collection of teaching resource materials and an excellent juvenile literature collection.
