How to Search for Reserve Readings in Library Databases

  • Lesley University faculty and students may use the Library’s databases to obtain articles for recommended or required reading.
  • If each instructor or student prints one copy of an article from a database for his or her own research, there is no copyright infringement or fee required.
  • Please note: copyright clearance must be obtained by anyone who wishes to make multiple copies and distribute the article.

Instructions

Faculty

  1. Select articles by searching full-text databases from the Library’s Databases Off-Campus Page. You may search by topic, or search for a particular article by title.
  2. If you have an article citation and want to see whether it appears full-text in one of our databases, check the List of Full Text and Print Journals
  3. To access the databases, log in to your myLesley account – https://my.lesley.edu.
  4. Click the my library tab in the top banner. Look for the Finding Articles box on the top left of the my library page.
  5. Click the Off-Campus link in the Finding Articles box. The current username and password are listed under the link. Enter the username and password in the window that opens and click OK.
  6. Copy the complete citation into your syllabus, indicating the database by name. For example:

Saban, A. (2002, Oct.). Toward a more intelligent school. Educational Leadership, 60, (2) 71-73. Available in Academic Search Premier database.

  1. Provide a link to this page
How to Search for Reserve Readings from Library Databases http://www.lesley.edu/library/guides/research/reservesonline.html#students

for student instructions, or print and photocopy this page to hand out.

  1. Notes:
    • Choosing databases from the Off-Campus page will assure that all students have access to the database from home or work.
    • As you prepare the syllabus, be sure to bring the full-text article up on the screen to print, even if it appears on the List of Full Text and Print Journals, in case there's an error in the list.
    • Databases listed at the top of the database page generally offer the highest percentage of full-text articles, in most of Lesley's fields of study.
    • Please be sure to include the name of the database where the article is available in your assignment or syllabus. Example: “Available in Expanded Academic ASAP database.”
    • Due to Lesley’s current authentication method, JSTOR and Lexis-Nexis databases are available on-campus only. These databases may be used for reserve readings for on-campus courses, but faculty are advised to tell students that the articles must be obtained from computers in the Lesley network.
    • Check back each semester to make sure the database still contains the article. Publishers sometimes pull journals without notification.

Students

  1. Log in to your myLesley account at https://my.lesley.edu/
  2. Click the my library tab in the top banner. Look for the Finding Articles box on the top left of the my library page.
  3. Click the Off-Campus link in the Finding Articles box. The current username and password are listed under the link. Enter the username and password in the window that opens and click OK.
  4. Click on the database indicated on your syllabus. In the search box, type the first few words of the article title, omitting the initial A, An, or The, and click Search. In the Result List, check that the article citation matches the citation on your syllabus.
  5. If the article matches the citation in your syllabus, go to #7.
  6. If there is no match, try a new search. Use the author's last name and a word from the title, joined by the word and.
  7. Bring up the full-text of the article on your screen. Print.

Example

The syllabus asks you to get the following article:

Saban, A. (2002, Oct.). Toward a More Intelligent School. Educational Leadership, 60, (2) p. 71-13. Available on Academic Search Premier database.

  1. Login to https://my.lesley.edu. Follow the instructions in Steps #2 and #3 above. Under Places to Start, choose Academic Search Premier.
  2. In the Search box, type the article title: Toward a More Intelligent School. Click Search.
  3. You will be given one or two options for full-text.
    • HTML Full Text is easiest. Simply click the link.
    • PDF Full Text requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  4. If you did not find the correct article with this search, try another:
    • saban and intelligent school
