Online Videos for Teaching Ideas

  • Annenberg Media

    Annenberg offers educational video programs with coordinated Web and print materials for the professional development of K-12 teachers. There are also videos featuring content appropriate for high school and college classes. Almost all Annenberg programs can be viewed on their website either as they are being broadcast via the Annenberg/CPB Channel or through “Video On Demand.” Programs can be searched by discipline, grade level or keyword. Windows Media Player and free registration for first time users are required to view videos.
  • Edutopia

    This site, put out by the George Lucas Educational Foundation, looks at models of innovative practices in K-12 public schools. The site includes over 150 online videos (choose " Video" from the menu on the left side of the web page) featuring short documentaries and interviews with experts on educational topics. Links to related articles are also included. Sample topics include: Project-Based Learning, Emotional Intelligence, Technology Integration and Assessment. Most videos offer a choice of viewing with QuickTime or Windows Media Player, or an audio only option.
  • PBS Online

    PBS has selected programs from a number of their video series available for online viewing, including NOVA, Frontline, Scientific American Frontiers, NewsHour, and Wide Angle. Go to the individual series website from the main PBS site and look for the “Watch Online” or “Video Archives” options. Viewing options vary by series and can include Real Player, Windows Media Player and/or QuickTime options.
  • PBS Teachers

    Multi-format educational resources for preK-12 teachers. Includes thousands of lesson plans, teaching activities, on-demand video clips, and interactive games, as well as professional development opportunities for teachers. Divided by subject. Many subject areas include links to online video of related PBS programs.
  • TeacherTube

    Officially launched in March 2007, TeacherTube , a free service, provides an online community for sharing instructional videos for teachers, schools and home learners. Members of the community can also post videos designed for student learning, along with related support materials such as lesson plans and activities.
  • Apple Learning Interchange

    A social network for educators containing content for K-12 teachers, as well as a channel for higher education faculty. Includes video, among other formats.
  • MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Online Learning and Teaching)
    http://www.merlot.org/merlot/index.htm
    Peer-reviewed online teaching and learning materials primarily for higher education, available in a variety of formats, including video. Many assignments also included.


Online Historical Videos

  • American Memory Collection

    This historical collection from the Library of Congress includes primary source materials relating to the history and culture of the United States. Moving images are included among the available formats. The above link will take you to the Browse Collections page. Choose Browse Collections Containing: Motion Pictures (direct link: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/browse/ListSome.php?format=Motion+Picture) to find a list of moving images available for viewing online. Formats available for motion pictures include MPEG, QuickTime and Real Media.
  • History Channel Video Gallery

    Includes historical speeches and other footage in video and audio formats.
  • The Living Room Candidate

    This site offers an online exhibition presenting more than 250 television presidential campaign commercials from every election year from 1952 through 2004. The site includes a searchable database and features commentary, historical background, and election results. Navigation is organized by both year and theme. Requires Windows Media Player or Real Player.
  • Internet Movie Archive

    The Internet Archive has the purpose of “offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format.” Their collection of moving digital images is “free and open for everyone to use.” Among its collections are the Prelinger Archives of ephemeral (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films, public domain feature films, open source movies, a video archive of Election 2004, Universal Newsreels, and many others.

Educational Lectures Online

  • MITWorld

    MITWorld is a free, open streaming media web site of the most significant public events at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It features unedited, unmodified videos of the most recent speakers and guests from across the campus and around the world. Video content can be searched by keyword, or browsed by sponsoring department hosts. Approximately 90 videos are added each year. RealPlayer is required.
  • WGBH Forum Network

    Live and archived webcasts (audio and video streaming) of free public lectures by the world’s foremost scholars, authors, artists and social leaders that take place around the Greater Boston area. The content can be browsed by category (examples: Education, Health, Poetry and Science and Technology) or organizations/partners (examples: Cambridge Forum, MIT, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, etc). There is also an option to search for lecture topics by keyword. RealPlayer is required to view the lectures. The site also now includes podcasts.
  • University of California at Berkeley on Google

  • The Research Channel

    “ Research Channel is nonprofit media and technology organization that connects a global audience with the research and academic institutions whose developments, insights and discoveries affect our lives and futures.” Includes over 3,000 videos in areas such as the Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Health, K-12 Education, Business and Economics, and Sciences. Windows Media Player or QuickTime required.

  • National Film Board of Canada: Focus on Animation

    Includes 50 animated films from National Film Board of Canada, including some classics. They are available to watch in Flash or QuickTime format. These can be searched by title, director, date and closed captioned or described video titles. The library has a small number of these in its video collection, but you can view all fifty of the videos here!
  • WGBH Services for People with Disabilities

    Information about accessible movies and television programming for people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or visually impaired. Includes schedules of closed captioned programs and programs featuring Descriptive Media Services (DVS- for the visually impaired) on WGBH channels, links to captioned and described webcasts, listing of movies and theaters equipped with WGBH's Rear Window® Captioning system and/or WGBH’s DVS Theatrical Service, and links to home videos featuring Descriptive Video Service. Also has links to research and development information for the CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media.

Video Rental Libraries

  • American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Video and Film Lending Library

    This collection includes over 1,000 films, videos and slide shows dealing with social, political, health, economic and gender issues. The catalogue can be searched by program topic or by title using most web browsers' "find" function. There is also an annotated alphabetical title list. Programs may be borrowed for classroom, public group or individual use. Donations are suggested for titles borrowed ranging from $5.00 - $25.00, depending on the use.

  • Penn State Audio Visual Services

    Access to large collection of educational film and video titles, most available for rental. Many titles in psychology, anthropology and education, among other subjects. Programs can be searched by title, keyword, series or subject headings as well as by audience level, language, and format. Programs are mailed to borrowers.

  • University of Missouri - Columbia

    Includes a collection of 5,000 films and videos in various subject areas available for short-term rental. Catalog is searchable by keyword, subject or series heading. Also includes a list of over 400 subject areas by which titles are categorized. Programs are mailed to borrowers.

  • Washington State University

    Includes a collection of close to 2,000 films and videotapes in various subject areas, most available for rental to outside users. Includes an alphabetical list of titles, a topical index, and an abstract/keyword search page. Programs are mailed to borrowers.

  • Black Film Center/Archive Home Page

    Maintains a database of over 4,600 films by and about African Americans, including historic, contemporary and independent films. Database research information about these films can be faxed or mailed (for a nominal fee). Also has many links to other internet resources related to African Americans in film.

  • Documentary Educational Resources

    A non-profit educational organization recognized as an international center for anthropological and sociological film. Has over 200 film and video titles featuring an in-depth archive of anthropological films and titles representing cultures and producers from every continent. Programs are available for purchase or rent. Can search by title, geography, subject, filmmaker, new releases. Includes a link to the Society for Visual Anthropology.

  • Docuseek Film and Video Finder

    This is a searchable site for independent, documentary, educational and social issue videos and films. The site currently searches the combined collections of seven leading distributors of independent documentary film and video. The distributors include: Bullfrog Films, Direct Cinema, Ltd., Fanlight Productions, First Run/Icarus Films, Frameline, New Day Films and Women Make Movies. The combined collections include over 1,800 titles and additional titles are expected as more distributors are added in the near future. Search options include searching by title, subject, geographic region, audience level, keyword, length, date, format, producer/director, distributor, awards and more. Other features include links to reviews, the represented distributors, journals, associations, and media copyright information.

  • Center for Asian American Media (formerly NAATA)

    The National Asian American Telecommunication Association offers films, videos and audiotapes by and about Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Materials are available for sale and rent.

  • University of North Texas Media Library Film and Video Collection on Aging

    A collection of over 700 films and videos on topics relating to aspects of aging and long term care.  Includes the Gerontological Film & Video Collection (GFVC) and the National Media Owl Award Video Collection (Owl).  Most titles can be rented for about $20.00 plus shipping.

    One of the longest established film resources on the Internet, maintained by 18 people in 6 countries and has information about 65,000 movies and 300,000 people. Can search by title, genre, year, actor, crew, character name, quotes and more. Has many cross-reference links!

  • The Internet Archive Moving Image Archive

  • National Film Preservation Board

    Includes links to the National Film Registry titles (a list of films deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically important" by the Board), motion picture research centers and film archives, film schools, preservation organizations, television resources, copyright information related to film, Library of Congress film resources and more.
