Applying to Grad School: Standardized Tests

Applying to graduate school requires taking a standardized test for the program you wish to enter.  While the Graduate Record Exam is used for many programs, more specialized programs require tests that demonstrate aptitude in a particular field.  For example, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is required by many business schools.  The LSAT is required by most law schools in the United States.  Below are some of the Web and print aides to help you practice for these tests and apply to a graduate program.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

This site provides detailed information on test centers, registering and testing for individuals with disabilities.  Complete practice tests may be downloaded.

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
http://www.mba.com/mba/TaketheGMAT
Here you will find information on deciding where to apply, how schools evaluate your application, and a description of the test.  You may register on site and get a free practice test.

Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
http://www.lsat.org
This excellent website provides information on test dates, applying to law school (minority applicants, factors to consider, and a guide to ABA-approved schools).  An online sample test is included.

Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
http://www.aamc.org
This site includes test dates, registration, fee, and preparation information.  A free practice test is available by registering on the site.      

Miller Analogies Test
http://www.milleranalogies.com
Included on this site is registration and application information, as well as a detailed explanation of analogies, types of relationships in MAT analogies, and strategies for solving analogies.  Fifty sample analogies with annotated answers are provided.

Commercial Sites Online

Sites posted by commercial publishers provide further test preparation ranging from a few sample questions to full-length exams.  Note that some sites charge a fee for use of online tests.

The Princeton Review

The Princeton Review offers registered users free online MCAT, GMAT, GRE, and LSAT practice exams.

REA Online
http://www.rea.com
REA Online offers abbreviated practice test (20 questions each) for the GMAT, GRE, and LSAT.

Peterson’s
http://www.petersons.com
Peterson’s offers online tests for a fee.

  • Barron’s How to Prepare for the MAT (Miller Analogies Test), 8th ed.  New York: Barron’s, 2001. REF LB2367.6 .S74  A thorough preparation for the MAT, this book provides a pretest, 10 practice tests, answers, explanations of answers, and reviews of vocabulary, literary forms and figures, music terms, science taxonomy, and mythology.
  • GRE Exam, 5th Ed.  New York: Kaplan Publishing (Simon and Schuster), 2001. REF LB2367.4 K375  This text provides reviews and explanations of types of questions that appear on the GRE, strategies to use, practice problems, and an explanation of the computerized version of the GRE and how to navigate it.  One complete practice test with answers and explanations is included.
  • Barron’s How to Prepare for the GRE Psychology, 5th ed.  New York: Barron’s, 2001. REF BF78.P34  This resource contains diagnostic tests, a review of psychology, and four full-length practice exams with answers and brief analyses.
