IM A Librarian FAQ
What is Instant Messaging?
Instant messaging is another way of communicating online, like e-mail, but
unlike e-mail it happens in real-time. No more waiting for a response in
your in-box.
In order to get started, you just need to create a screen
name and account
with an instant messaging provider.
Where can I get instant messaging software?
There is an ever expanding number of options for instant messaging software.
At Lesley University Library, we support three of those most popular versions.
To go to their Web sites and get started, just click on the links below.
•
AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)
•
ahoo! Messenger
•MSN Messenger
•Google Talk
What is a screen name?
Your screen name is the name attached to your instant messaging account and
the name people see when you send them messages. You will need to create
an account with a screen name with an instant messaging provider before
chatting
with a librarian.

Do I have to download software in order to use instant messaging?
No! You can log-in to the Web based version of instant messaging on the provider’s
Web site. You’ll find links to web based instant messaging on our Ask
A Librarian – instant messaging page.
