TUTORING FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS

Is school too difficult or not challenging enough? Our dedicated staff of professional tutors knows just how to motivate and educate! Whether your child needs extra help in a particular subject, specialized teaching methods, or an enrichment program, tutoring sessions will be designed to specifically meet your child's needs. Here's how it works

TYPES OF SERVICES OFFERED

The Learning Lab provides tutoring support, which emphasizes enrichment, skill development or remediation, for homework and organizational difficulties, reading, writing, math, and other school subjects. We also offer specialized instruction.

Reading
We can help your child learn to read, become an efficient reader, and improve his understanding and focus. Our tutors use specialized reading programs, such as the Wilson Reading Program, Orton-Gillingham Reading and Writing, and Lexia Learning Systems.

Writing
Whether your child has difficulty with handwriting, punctuation, spelling, or grammar, or turning ideas into words on paper, tutoring at The Learning Lab can make a real difference.

Math
If your child needs reinforcement to make math facts more automatic, or needs to learn special ways to overcome visual-perceptual or memory weaknesses to learn math more efficiently, we can help.

Attention and organization
In addition to tutoring, your child may need help with planning and organizational difficulties often associated with ADHD. The Learning Lab can provide tutors with knowledge and experience in addressing these needs.

English as a second/other language (ESL/ESOL)
Trained and experienced tutors can provide support for ESL/ESOL students who are having difficulties either in their acquisition of English or in their academic courses.

Enrichment
Some children turn off to school because it's just not challenging enough. Let our tutors provide supplemental instruction that's integrated with your child's curriculum. Adding the right kind of spice can turn boredom into a recipe for success! Available to all kids who might need a more stimulating curriculum, The Learning Lab is one of the few places that specialize in meeting the needs of gifted and talented kids with LD, ADHD or Asperger syndrome.

THE PROCESS

How often your child goes to tutoring
You may schedule as many tutoring sessions per week as you believe your child needs. However, we recommend a minimum of three 50-minute sessions since research and experience have convinced us that less frequent intervention is not very helpful in making lasting gains. In some cases, we may recommend additional sessions or you may request them. We will accommodate your work and vacation schedules as well as any special requests.

What we need from you
We find that the information you provide us can help us get to know your child better and therefore allow us to design tutoring that is tailored specifically to your child's needs. This information may include:

  • Samples of recent work
  • Any evaluations, including academic, psychological, or neuropsychological testing: While not a requirement, an evaluation will allow us to help you with future planning. If you wish, you may arrange for an assessment of your child's learning and attentional needs through the Learning Lab. We can also perform a formal records review of existing documents to help you fully understand your child's learning style and needs.
  • Comments or reports from teachers or other tutors.

Collaborating with teachers
We value working collaboratively with teachers. We find that their insights into classroom performance and schoolwork will help us help parents and children more effectively. Although we encourage collaboration and a "team" approach, we do not insist upon it since we respect your confidentiality and privacy. However, we would appreciate it if you would consider giving your child's teachers permission to communicate with us. We will provide you with a letter that you may use for this purpose, which will also inform them about the services of The Learning Lab. [Click here to print out the letter.]

How to enroll
You may sign-up for tutoring services by printing out and completing the application for services form, and then mailing or faxing it to the Learning Lab. (To view this document, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. Click to download.)

If you need more information, you may call the Coordinator of Tutoring Services at 617-349-8711 or email Coordinator of Tutoring Services at the Learning Lab or go to our Services or Request Information pages. We look forward to helping your child.

TUTORING FOR ADULTS

Is college or graduate school difficult? Working towards your GED? Out of school, but still want or need help? Our dedicated staff of professional tutors knows just how to help you! Whether you need extra assistance in a particular subject or specialized teaching methods, your sessions will be designed to specifically meet your needs. Here's how it works.

TYPES OF SERVICES OFFERED

The Learning Lab provides support for organizational difficulties, reading, writing, math, and other academic subjects. We also offer specialized instruction for clients who have significant difficulties.

Reading, Writing, and Math
Trouble with the three "R's" -- reading, writing, and arithmetic -- can cause many problems in and out of school. We'll help you read difficult vocabulary, read more efficiently, and read with greater understanding and focus. In writing, we can show you how to organize your thoughts, turn ideas into words, and write in language that reflects your knowledge and intelligence. Whether your needs in math involve helping you balance your checkbook or work through difficult math processes, we can help you find success.

Organization and Attention
Problems with attention and organization can make academics challenging for even for the brightest person. We can help you develop better planning and organizational skills to make learning less stressful for you, as well as teach you strategies to help you become an efficient student. Learn how to work smarter instead of harder, and find out how it feels to accomplish what you want.

English as a Second/Other Language (ESL/ESOL)
The Learning Lab has tutors with training and experience in ESL/ESOL. If you speak English as a second or other language and are having difficulties with learning English or with your academic classes, we can offer you specialized support.

Not sure if we have what you need? Call us. We've helped many people achieve success in and out of school.

OUR POLICIES

Fees
Tutoring fees are due at each session and are payable by credit card or a check made out to Lesley University. We require a non-refundable minimum payment of four sessions by the first meeting. The four-session minimum provides an opportunity for the tutor and your child to get to know each other, as well as form a relationship that will help your child learn better. A five percent discount is offered for prepayment of six or more sessions after the first four.

Location
Most tutoring sessions take place at the Learning Lab @ Lesley University, located in the Porter Exchange Building at 1815 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge. However, tutoring may be arranged at an offsite location for an additional fee. Tutoring is never delivered in your home.

Session length
Tutoring sessions are 50 minutes long. Tutors are happy to chat with you briefly about your child's progress. If you feel you need an extended conversation, please make an appointment.

Materials
The Learning Lab generally provides materials unless they are single use items, such as workbooks, which we ask that you buy. The tutor will consult with you in advance about purchasing such items. Since we want to make sure the work done at the Learning Lab is coordinated with what's going on in school, the tutor may want to use materials that your child uses in the classroom.

Cancellation policy
We require 24 hours' notice, except in the case of a medical emergency, and ask that you contact both the Learning Lab and the tutor. These sessions may be rescheduled. You will be billed for sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice.

Questions
Please feel free to address any concerns or questions to the Coordinator of Tutoring Services at any time.

If you would like more information on this and other services please see our Request Information page.
