Fresh from a trip to Peru with his students, Professor Morimoto is quite animated as he describes the hands-on learning that benefited everyone — including
himself.
"When I teach, I learn. You can’t separate this. And when you’re
in the field, you observe patterns, notice phenomena, ask questions…you
develop a large scale perspective on Earth as a living system."
With the trip to Peru, Morimoto’s students were able to explore the
ecology of rainforests in the largest intact example left on earth. "This
gives them a new kind of awareness, a new way of thinking that is powerful,"
he remarks.
Professor Morimoto’s enthusiasm carries over to the classroom as well.
"I’m excited by the opportunity to articulate a vision for our
programs that involves an environmental science focus with a real emphasis
on biodiversity. My goal is to erase the line between lecture and lab and
instead, facilitate thoughtful discussions as an immediate response to experiments
or work in the field."
