"Not easy" is how Professor Hoagstadius describes herself. And
students love her for it.
"I expect students to think. I want them to understand — and
question — their own values and opinions. I want them to learn how
to make connections, between their lives and the problems we face like homelessness,
poverty and racism."
And she certainly doesn’t let them get away with thinking it’s
not their problem. "The sweater is on sale, but the label says ‘Made
in Bangladesh’ where workers are paid three cents a day. Can you really
buy that sweater?" Hoagstadius asks her students.
Having the conversation is what Hoagstadius enjoys most. And the impact
it can have on students’ lives is something she learned firsthand
herself at Lesley — as an undergraduate studying Human Services.
