Our students benefit from learning that combines theoretical discussions in the classroom with real world experience. Hands-on professional growth opportunities ensure students are prepared to succeed. Graduates' employment rate is over 90% for the last five years.
Every program at Lesley University combines rigorous theoretical study
with opportunities for students to apply the knowledge they have gained
in the classroom in real world professional practice.
Internships and field placements are the hallmark of a Lesley education. They begin as early as freshman year for undergraduates, helping to affirm (or sometimes reconsider) career aspirations. Field-based learning is then integrated into the classroom, where students share and reflect on their experiences with peers and faculty, who provide guidance and insight throughout the process. As students build knowledge and skills, their field experiences intensify, leading to more responsibility and professional development. While internship and field placement opportunities vary by chosen major or program, most students will graduate with over 300 hours of real-world learning, building both their resumes, and professional contacts.

"At Lesley University, the field placement office found a classroom that matched my professional interests. After completing my early field experience and 14-week practicum at the Peabody School in Cambridge, I accepted a full-time teaching position there the next fall."
- Dan Tobin, M.Ed., 2011
"Theoretical knowledge provides a foundation but this knowledge must be molded into a usable form that can be applied to real-world problem solving."
- Selase Williams, Provost
Lesley University's emphasis on theory and practice ensures that students have a real understanding of the professional requirements necessary to succeed in their chosen careers. Theoretical learning emphasizes multiple ways of knowing; historical, psychological, analytical. Classroom discussions, readings and research provide a solid theoretical foundation.
Students then turn this knowledge into a usable form by applying it in real world settings through internships, field placements, and practicums. Field-based teacher mentors support student success during their program and create significant post-graduate networking opportunities.
